McPHERSON, Kan. — The McPherson College Bulldogs wrapped up the home portion of their schedule on a cold and rainy Saturday (Oct. 28), falling to No. 12-ranked Evangel University at McPherson Stadium.
The Valor struck first less than five minutes into the game intercepting Tristan Szabo, then scoring on a 25-yard touchdown pass from RJ Wakely to Paul Summers II.
Another Szabo interception late in the first quarter set the Valor up with another short field when Ian Ary jumped a screen pass and returning it to the Bulldogs four yard-line. But the Bulldogs defense came up big with Zane Cornejo breaking up Wakely's pass on third down to force the Valor to kick a field goal.
The Valor added to their lead on their next possession, marching the length of the field for a nine-play 99-yard touchdown drive, capped off by a 27-yard pass to Eric Williams.
Jacob Goad gave the Bulldogs the ball back at the Evangel 27 yard-line with a strip sack recovered by Avery Duncan. Szabo scored from five yards out with 18 seconds left in the half.
The Bulldogs had a chance early in the fourth quarter when Zane Cornejo forced a fumble, but the ensuing drive came up short, when Brysen Kerby was stopped short on fourth down.
The Valor burned nearly ten minutes from the clock with a 15-play drive, but the Bulldogs defense came up big again thanks to a pass break up by Christopher Roshell on fourth down.
MC had one last chance, but Szabo's pass to Traven Lewis-Johnson on fourth down fell incomplete.
Kerby led the Bulldogs' (5-4) backfield with 17 carries for 91 yards. Burnts Lewis caught five passes for 39 yards.
The Bulldogs hit the road next Saturday (Nov. 4) when they travel to Wichita to take on Friends University. Kickoff is slated for 1:00 p.m. at Riverfront Stadium.
