HILLSBORO, Kan. — The McPherson College Bulldogs comeback bid fell short Tuesday (Feb. 28), falling to the Tabor College Bluejays 7-5 in Hillsboro, Kan.
Caleb Feuerstake put the Bulldogs on top with a solo homer to center field in the opening frame, but Tabor responded with three runs in the third, three in the fifth, and one in the sixth.
That set the stage for the comeback. The Bulldogs started the eighth with three straight singles by Antonio Fernandez, Hunter Robinson, and Andres Artola, with the latter driving in pinch-runner Ky'rell Taylor.
Kevinn Castillo kept it going with a double that brought Robinson and Artola to the plate and cut the lead to 7-4.
Matt Whitney came on and struck out two in the bottom of the eighth to hold the Bluejays scoreless heading into the ninth.
The Bulldogs quickly loaded the bases in the final inning before Artola was hit by the pitch to scratch across the final run. But back-to-back strikeouts ended the game.
Fernandez kept his stellar season going, with a two-hit game, while Robinson and Castillo each added a pair of hits.
The Bulldogs are back in action on Saturday (Mar. 4) to open a three-game series against Southwestern College.
