McPHERSON, Kan. — The McPherson College Bulldogs made a statement Sunday (Mar. 19), completing the series sweep over the (RV) Kansas Wesleyan Coyotes, winning 7-5 and 17-11 at Bulldog Park.
The Bulldogs trailed by as many as six (10-4) in the nightcap after the Coyotes scored four runs in the second inning and six in the third.
But from there, the offense took over, plating 12 unanswered runs, including a massive 11-run fourth inning. James Canar got it started with an RBI single to left field to drive in a pair of runs. Then, a double to left center by Andres Artola, Jr. brought home two more. Artola would later score on a passed ball.
Caleb Feuerstake, Antonio Fernandez, and Hunter Robinson all joined in with base hits that added to the Bulldogs' total. Artola finished it up with an RBI single up the middle.
The 11-run frame saw 18 plate appearances by the Bulldogs and also included five different Coyote pitchers.
Fernandez and Canar each homered in the game-two win, and Feuerstake and Fernandez drove in four runs apiece. Canar, Robinson, and Artola each finished the game with three RBIs.
The Bulldogs finished with 17 runs on 15 hits and benefited from four Kansas Wesleyan errors.
"Another really strong day from the team. It's great to see the consistent focus and fight from our group," assistant coach Joe Ellison said. "Hayden Foster has had a great year offensively. It may not show up in the boxscore, but hes been outstanding and for him to come through late in game one was big for our group. Game two was a wild one, tons of offense would be an understatement. The fourth inning really showed our team's will to win. I hope we continue the trend on Tuesday with another tough KCAC matchup against Tabor."
In the opener, it was the Bulldogs that grabbed an early lead, using RBI singles by Feuerstake, Fernandez, and Canar to take a 3-1 advantage.
Fernandez would push the lead to 4-1 with a double to the gap in right field to score Feuerstake.
The Coyotes cut into the lead in the seventh following a home run by Kevin Esquilin-Cruz, but Gage Ninness answered in the next half-inning with a solo blast of his own.
Three runs in the top of the eighth, including a two-run homer by Zack Beatty, helped the Coyotes tie the ballgame, but Hayden Foster put the Bulldogs on top for good with a double to left-center field bringing home two runs.
The Bulldogs remain home Tuesday (Mar. 21) for another big KCAC clash against (RV) Tabor College. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
