McPHERSON, Kan. — Antonio Fernandez had himself a day Saturday (Apr. 29), going 5-for-5 at the plate in game one with three RBIs to help lift the McPherson College Bulldogs to a doubleheader sweep over the York University Panthers at Bulldog Park.
The Bulldogs scored one in the second to take an early lead, then Andres Artola singled up the middle in the fourth to bring Hunter Robinson around to score.
York pulled within 2-1 in the fifth, but Fernandez answered with a two-run homer in the next half-inning, his 12th of the season. Dawson Walters kept the inning going with an RBI double down the left field line, then Artola singled home Walters and Gage Ninness.
The Panthers briefly trimmed the lead with a three-run home run by Cesar Galvan, but again the Bulldogs answered with a big inning, putting up four runs in the seventh to take an 11-4 lead.
York made things interesting in the eighth, rounding out the scoring with three runs.
Blake Maddock struck out eight batters in 6.2 innings of work. Artola finished game one with two hits and three RBIs.
Baserunners were hard to come by in the nightcap, with the Bulldogs finishing with six runs on nine hits.
A pair of sacrifice flies by Kevinn Castillo and James Canar in the first and second innings, respectively, put the Bulldogs on the board early.
Ninness tripled in the third, bringing in Castillo and Fernandez, then Walters followed with an RBI triple of his own in the next at-bat to make it a 5-0 Bulldog lead. Artola rounded out the scoring with an infield single, scoring Walters.
The teams will conclude the three-game set with a single game tomorrow (Apr. 30). Senior Day festivities will begin at 1:10 p.m., with the first pitch slated for 2 p.m.
