Football Bulldogs Fall to Kansas Wesleyan in Defensive Battle

SALINA, Kan. — The Kansas Wesleyan University Coyotes scored with 4:04 remaining, then forced a fumble on a windy Saturday (Sep. 30) to knock off the McPherson College Bulldogs 10-7 at Gene Bissell Field in Salina, Kan.

The Bulldogs moved the ball well in the second half, but a turnover-on-downs, two interceptions, and a missed field goal kept them off the board.

Kobe Brown recovered a fumble by Byron McNair to set up the Bulldogs lone scoring drive as Tristan Szabo found Burnts Lewis for a 30-yard touchdown pass to lead 7-3 with 8:17 left in the game.

Kansas Wesleyan answered with a nine-play 75-yard scoring drive to lead 10-7. The Bulldogs had one last chance, marching down the field to the 13 yard-line, but a strip sack by Josh King-Bradley closed out the game.

Szabo finished 29-for-53 for 273 yards and a touchdown. Lewis had six catches for 75 and a score, while Jamichael Turman caught five passes for 54 yards.

Neither team was efficient on third down with the Bulldogs (4-2) finishing 4-for-17, while Kansas Wesleyan going 2-for-15 on third down.

The Bulldogs will have the next week off before hitting the road on Oct. 14 to take on Bethel College in North Newton to open divisional play.
