Softball Bulldogs Split with Saint Mary

McPHERSON, Kan. — The McPherson College Bulldogs scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh of game two Saturday (Mar. 23) to salvage a split with the University of Saint Mary Spires at Bulldog Park.

GAME ONE – USM 4, MC 0

The Spires benefitted from four Bulldog errors, scoring two runs in the first, one more in the third, and one in the sixth to take a 4-0 lead.

The Bulldogs loaded the bases in the seventh, but were unable to score.

MC finished with just three hits, with Rowdy New, Alyvia Quintana, and Kaitlyn Sarsfield each finishing with one hit apiece. Jordyn Johnson got the start in the circle and threw seven innings with four strikeouts, while allowing just three earned runs.

GAME TWO – MC 5, USM 4

MC got off to a hot start in the nightcap, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first thanks to an RBI single by Samantha Hollingsworth, then plating a pair of runs on an error by the Spires first baseman.

A three-run third inning by the Spires leveled the score. The game would remain tied until the top of the seventh when Megan Brinkman doubled to right field bringing home Alexis McDaniel.

Down to their last three outs, Hannah Wagner sparked the comeback, reaching on an error, then a pair of singles by Tatyana Alvarado and Alivia Lange brought Wagner home, tying the score.

Then, with the bases loaded, Hollingsworth brought the winning run home, reaching on a fielder's choice, sealing the victory for the Bulldogs.

Lange and Hollingsworth paced the Bulldogs with two hits apiece, while Alvarado and New each added one hit.

Hollingsworth made the start for the Bulldogs and pitched a complete game with three strikeouts.

The Bulldogs are back at Bulldog Park on Thursday (Mar. 28) for a doubleheader against Sterling College. First pitch is slated for 2:00 p.m.
