McPHERSON, Kan. — Despite a solid showing from the Bulldog bats, the Avila Eagles rode an early 10-0 lead all the way to victory on Friday (Mar. 28) as they defeated MC, 15-7.
It took no time for the Eagles to flex their power as a two run homerun in the top half of the very first inning jumpstarted what turned out to be a 10-0 run throughout the first three innings of the contest. During this string of unanswered runs, Avila hit another two run homerun and hit a three run RBI double to create what looked to be an inescapable early hole.
The Bulldogs refused to go down without putting up a fight on their home field as
Jared Kramp finally got MC on the board in the bottom of the third inning off a fielder's choice to bring home
Jace Essig to begin cutting down the lead.
Colt Sussex-Uphold followed him up with a solo homerun to the deepest part of center field to make it an eight run game.
Luke Nordean kept the runs coming for MC in the fourth with a two run homerun to cut the lead to six. A massive two run RBI triple by Kramp followed up by a Sussex-Uphold sacrifice fly brought the Bulldogs to within just three runs heading into the middle innings of the contest.
After scoring seven runs across just two innings, the MC offense failed to cash in again as they ended the contest leaving a total of 10 runners on base and the Avila bats came back to life after going dormant for a time as they pushed five more runs across between the fifth and eighth innings to take game one of the three game series.
The Bulldogs will face the Eagles in game two and game three of the series tomorrow, March 29 with the first pitch of game one being set for 12:00 and game two starting 30 minutes afterwards.
