Baseball Enters KCAC Tournament as 5th Seed Following Road Sweep over Bethany

Lindsborg, Kan – Over the weekend, the Bulldogs wrapped up their final three games of the regular season ahead of the KCAC Tournament. They would head 15 minutes North to face the Swedes of Bethany College. With the seeding of the conference tournament in the air, the Bulldogs needed quality wins in the final stretch of their schedule on the road.

The Basics
Location: Philip Anderson Field
Records: MC 26-22 (22-14 KCAC), BC 17-33 (11-25 KCAC)

Game One: MC 11, BC 6
This series started off with five back-and-forth innings of baseball as the Swedes and Bulldogs went run-for-run in Game One; that was until the Bulldogs' sixth and seventh inning at the plate.

Jaylon Woodley was responsible for the first two runs of the game in the top of the first after making his way all the way to third on an infield error, pushing Kramp to score from third after his leadoff triple. Woodley would then score later on a wild pitch, giving McPherson the early two-run lead. Bethany tied the game in the bottom of the first on Yan Ortiz's two RBI single.

Fast-forwarding to a 5-5 ballgame in the sixth inning, Troy Stukenberg sent a two-run blast over the left field fence to give McPherson a 7-5 lead over Bethany. In the seventh, Ky'rell Taylor's RBI single drove in Jaiden Diasio to extend the lead to three; Myles Vazquez brought another pair of runs home on his two RBI single later in the inning.

The Bulldogs gave up just one more run in the eighth inning, but it was essentially erased following Kramp's home run to right center field to give McPherson the 11-6 lead. Following three quick outs in the bottom of the ninth, the Bulldogs would set the tone for the weekend with an 11-6 series-opening victory.

Game Two: MC 15, BC 6
In their second matchup on the next day, Kadin Gehring got the start on the mound for the Bulldogs, throwing for four innings and allowing just two runs off of four hits, striking out five batters along the way.

The obvious highlighted inning of this matchup was McPherson's incredible performance in the top of the ninth. Down 6-5 to the Swedes, the Bulldogs rattled off 10 runs to take a 15-6 lead into the bottom half of the inning. The 10-run spark started with a sacrifice fly from Woodley who batted in Taylor to knot the game at 6-6. Marcus Patton's single to left field gave the Bulldogs the lead after Kramp made his way home on the RBI single. With bases loaded, Steele Jackson walked in a run for the two-run lead. Isaiah Berard found bat to ball and singled to left field, sending home another pair of runs for the visitors. Taylor's third hit of the day drove in Berard and Jackson to give the Bulldogs a 12-6; and they still weren't done.

Vazquez's RBI walk brought in Taylor to score; this was followed by Patton's fourth hit of the day. His single brought in the final two runs of the day to give McPherson a 15-6 lead heading into the bottom half of nine. The Swedes were able to work themselves into a bases loaded situation with two outs down, but Eduardo Tarafa flew out to right field, giving McPherson their second win of the series.

Game Three: MC 16, BC 11
Despite Bethany's bats getting hot in Game Three with the series already decided, the Bulldogs carried their streak into the third after racking up 12 hits and 16 runs. Matthew Vigil was called upon for this matchup and threw for three innings, allowing three earned runs off of four hits. He would pick up the win in this contest, making it his third win of the regular season.

Vigil was followed by four pitchers who each threw for an inning each. Nico Gonzalez and Hunter Boneau would both allow no hits and no runs to score in their stint on the mound.

The Swedes led by two for the first two innings of this contest, but after McPherson's five-spot in the third, it'd be the last lead they would see for the weekend. The Bulldogs' best inning on offense was the fifth inning where they would total six runs scored, holding a 13-5 lead heading further into the game.

Bethany managed to close the gap to three runs in the sixth inning, but infield errors haunted the Swedes as they would allow two runs to score for the Bulldogs in the top of the seventh; both of them were off of errors.

McPherson would hold off Bethany 16-11 in Game Three to sweep the series on the road. This marked the first road series sweep for the Bulldogs since 2025 when they defeated Evangel University on February 23rd and 24th by a combined score of 19-13.

With the regular season completed, McPherson enters the KCAC Tournament this week as the 5th seed in the bracket. They'll take on the 4th seeded Friends University Falcons this Wednesday up in Salina, Kansas at Dean Evans Stadium. First pitch is set for 3:30 PM CST.
