Substance Abuse Education and Testing Notification Procedures

The process of drug test notification to student-athletes will be as follows:

  1. A test date, location, time will be determined in coordination with DFS and Corporate Health.
  2. The Substance Abuse Committee Chair will ask to have Drug Free Sport randomly select those student-athletes who will be tested (as applicable).
  3. The Committee Chair will be notified by Drug Free Sport of those student-athletes selected for drug testing (as applicable).
  4. The Committee Chair will notify the affected head coaches either the day of, or the day prior to, a scheduled test date. At this time, they will be given the list of those student-athletes selected, and offered instructions to inform their student-athletes to report to the athletic training room during a specific time block to receive further instructions. This will be at the responsibility of the head coach or an assistant coach.
  5. Student-athletes will generally be notified of their selection for testing no more than 18 hours prior to the assigned testing time.  Testing without prior notice is permissible.
  6. The student-athlete shall communicate with and/or report to the athletic training staff to complete the Drug Testing Notification Form (PDF), acknowledging that he or she is aware of the upcoming test. Failure to report to the athletic training office following initial notification may be deemed a positive test, with additional sanctions to be determined at the discretion of the Substance Abuse Committee.
  7. Without a verified reason acceptable to the Substance Abuse Committee Chair, a student-athlete who could not be located for the initial notification of drug testing will be suspended from all athletic participation until a test can be rescheduled. All expenses incurred, including the cost of the drug test, due to a re-scheduled test will be paid for by the student-athlete
  8. IT IS THE REPSONSIBILITY OF THE STUDENT-ATHLETE TO CHECK HIS OR HER VARIOUS COMMUNICATIONS DEVICES REGULARLY.
