Women fall short at Tabor

Women's Basketball | 12/11/2009 12:00:00 AM

Box Score Hillsboro, Kan. – The McPherson College women’s basketball team erased a 13-point halftime deficit, but the Tabor College Blue Jays proved to be too much down the stretch as the Bulldogs lost, 57-61 last night at Tabor Gymnasium in Hillsboro, Kan.

The loss drops the Bulldogs to 4-6 overall and 1-2 in KCAC play, while the Blue Jays improve to 2-8 overall and 1-2 in conference action.

Guards Michelle Ducy and Kristen Ozbun paced the McPherson offensive attack. Ozbun tied a season high 19 points, while Ducy set a career-high with 18 points on 8-of-14 shooting from the field. The duo also collected six rebounds apiece, while Ducy led the Bulldogs with four assists.

Blue Jay guard Andrea Robinson led all scorers with 21 points on 7-of-10 shooting, including 3-of-5 from beyond the three-point arch. Robinson chipped in six rebounds and four assists in the effort.

The Bulldogs took the early lead with a 5-0 run, with all five points coming from Ozbun. The Blue Jays took advantage of poor shooting by the Bulldogs to pull within one point, 13-14 with 11:13 left in the half.

Tabor took the lead on their next possession as Tynan Honn found herself open under the basket for the easy two. McPherson was within two until the Bulldogs hit a cold spell, as they shot 0-of-13 the last 6:26 of the first half.

The Bulldog drought allowed the Blue Jays to extend their lead to 13 points at the break, 31-18.

McPherson struggled from the floor in the first half, shooting just 23.5 percent.

A jumper by Honn and a three pointer by Robinson to start the second half extended the TC lead to 16, 38-22.

McPherson pulled the game back within single digits as sophomore guard Brooke Weisenburger connected on two three-pointers. The two sides traded baskets for a better part of the second half, until a 7-0 run by the Bulldogs capped by a Michelle Ducy free throw knotted the score at 52-52.

Tabor answered the McPherson run as Robinson connected on another three-pointer to pull the Jays lead back to three, 55-52.

Ozbun would connect on a runner in the lane to pull within one, but the Blue Jays proved to be too much down the stretch, connecting on 4-of-6 free throws to finish out the game.

McPherson finished the game shooting 24-of-67 (35.8 percent) from the field.

MC hits the road for the second time this week and will face Bethany College on Dec. 12. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
