Peru, Neb. – The McPherson College women’s basketball program suffered a 91-64 loss in its season opener Friday night at Peru State College.
The Bulldogs struggled to get their shots to fall as it made just 31.4 percent (22-of-27) from the field and went 6-for-22 (27.3 percent) from beyond the three-point line. Peru, meanwhile, connected on 34-of-59 shots (57.6 percent) from the field, including a 19-of-30 (63.3 percent) performance in the first half. The Bobcats finished the night 6-of-9 from long range and 7-of-11 from the foul stripe.
McPherson struggled in the first half as the hot Bobcat shooting propelled Peru to a 51-24 halftime lead. The Bulldogs came into their own in the second half, as MC matched Peru basket for basket, but could not overcome the first half deficit.
Senior guard Kristen Ozbun (Rose Hill, Kan.) led McPherson with 17 points on 6-of-18 shooting from the field, while Brooke Weisenburger (Gardner, Kan.) added 10 points in the effort.
For Peru, three players hit double figures with Alicia Bender leading the way with 20 points.
McPherson returns to action on Tuesday, Nov. 2 against Haskell Indian Nations University. Tip is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. in Lawrence, Kan.
