North Newton, Kan. – The McPherson College men’s tennis team fell to the Bethel College Threshers, 5-4, on Monday, April 9 in North Newton, Kan. The Bulldogs, who won their first KCAC match last weekend against Friends University, dropped to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in conference action.
McPherson jumped out to an early 2-1 lead after winning two out of three doubles matches, including a pair of comeback victories at the No. 2 and 3 spots. The closest doubles match came at the No. 3 spot where senior Nathan Clary and sophomore Kyle Toland, McPherson, defeated the BC pairing of Patrick Loganbill and Jordan Esau 9-7.
Singles proved to be McPherson’s Achilles heel, as the Bulldogs only won two of six matches. No. 1 singles player Vyacheslav Bukatin, McPherson, knocked off Bethel No. 1 Sam Gaeddert in decisive fashion 6-1, 6-0, while the No. 2 Bulldog, Ronaldo Filho, defeated Ben Moore in a three set thriller, 5-7, 7-5, 6-2.
Despite the momentum from the No. 1 and 2 spot victories, Bethel battled back winning the No.3 through No. 6 matches.
The Bulldogs return to the court on Thursday, April 15, to take on the Tabor College Blue Jays. First serve is set for 3:00 p.m. in McPherson, Kan.
