McPherson, Kan. – A ten-run second inning, including a pair of runs from sophomore Sadie Green powered the McPherson softball team to a 13-3 five-inning victory over Sterling College in game two Saturday night at Wall Park.
The Bulldogs never trailed as they scored one in the first before batting around in the bottom of the second. In the inning, McPherson scored 10 runs on nine hits, including a single and double by Green. Freshman Kayla Larkin added to the Bulldog lead in the bottom of the fourth with her first career home run to open the inning.
Green was one of four Bulldogs to finish the evening with three hits. Sophomore Katie Logan, freshman Kayla Larkin and senior Kristen Ozbun were the other three. Logan and Ozbun both were 3-for-4 from the dish. Logan ended the game with two RBI, while Ozbun scored two runs. Larkin posted the only home run of the game, the first of her career, in her 3-for-3 day.
In the circle, right-hander Katie Logan (4-7) earned the win, allowing three runs on four hits in five innings. Logan walked three, while striking out four.
LaChelle Bell took the loss for Sterling. She pitched only two innings, but allowed 11 runs on 11 hits.
McPherson score immediately after Ozbun and freshman Kelsey Dutton each tallied one out singles and stolen bases to put runners on second and third with one away. The next hitter, Andrea Falk, laid a perfect sacrifice to score Ozbun from third and give MC the early 1-0 lead.
The Bulldogs then exploded for their 10 run second inning. Green opened the inning with a double to center, which set to tone for McPherson offensively, as the Bulldogs scored 10 runs on nine hits and one error.
Sterling came back to score one in the third, but the Bulldogs matched in the bottom of the inning on Larkin’s home run.
SC plated a pair in the fourth that was again match by a McPherson run before the Warriors went down in order in the top of the fifth to give McPherson the win.
McPherson (8-18-1, 3-13 KCAC) returns to action on Thursday, April 29, as they open KCAC Tournament play.
