Hillsboro, Kan. – Windy conditions frustrated the Bulldogs offense into just 14 hits and six runs over three games as the McPherson College softball team finished day one of the KCAC Postseason Softball tournament 1-2. The double elimination tournament was hosted by Tabor College at the Hillsboro Sports Complex.
McPherson finishes the season with a 9-20-1 record, including a 3-13 mark in KCAC action.
The No. 8 seeded Bulldogs opened the day with a loss to No. 9 Kansas Wesleyan University. The Coyotes scored six unanswered runs, including four in the first two innings to propel themselves to the 6-0 victory.
In game two, McPherson’s lone victory of the day, MC recorded a tournament-high five runs on nine hits to defeat the University of Saint Mary, 5-4. The Bulldogs took an early 3-0 lead, but surrendered four runs in the top of the sixth to find themselves trailing 4-3 in the final frame.
After surrending USM in order in the top half, McPherson ‘s freshman catcher Janie Gunther came through with a two out walk off single. Senior Kristen Ozbun opened the inning with a leadoff double down the left field line. After stealing third, Ozbun would come around to score on a wild pitch to tie the game, 4-4. Following a Kelsey Dutton line out, Andrea Falk and Sadie Green connected on back-to-back singles to put runners on second and first with two outs. Falk scored on Gunther’s single.
The conditions worsened in game three. McPherson scored one run in the bottom of the seventh to cut the deficit to one, 2-1, against the Sterling College Warriors, but could not capitalize as Ashley Toepfer struckout swinging to end the game.
