Bulldogs Fall in Four at Kansas Wesleyan

The McPherson College volleyball team battled back from a 2-0 deficit, but it was not enough as the Bulldogs fell 19-25, 11-25, 27-25, 22-25 at Kansas Wesleyan University in Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference action on Wednesday evening at Mabee Arena.
 
With the loss, McPherson goes to 8-13 overall and 5-6 in conference play, while the Coyotes improve to 17-7 overall and extend their unbeaten conference mark to 11-0.
 
Senior Kory Hiebert (Goessel, Kan.) and junior Natalie Boss (Waterville, Kan.) led McPherson with nine kills each. Hiebert also posted a team-best .304 hitting percentage and five block assists. Freshman Tori Phelan (Rangely, Colo.) continued her consistent play of late with seven kills and five digs.
 
Defensively, senior Brooke Wedel (Moundridge, Kan.) posted a match-high 36 digs, while senior Brelynn Schloo (Salina, Kan.) added 12 digs to go along with a game-high 24 assists. Junior Hannah Hoffman (Bendena, Kan.) added 15 assists and 11 digs.
 
The Bulldogs struggled offensively in the opening two frames, including a -.047 attacking percentage in the first set, to fall into an early 2-0 hole.  However, McPherson battled back to claim set three, 27-25. The Bulldogs opened the set with a 5-0 run and held an advantage until late in the set when an MC attacking error tied the score 24-24. However, back-to-back hitting errors by the Coyotes and a point awarded to MC by the official cut the deficit to 2-1.
 
But it turned out to be too little too late as the Coyotes regained the momentum to claim the fourth and decisive set, 22-25.
 
As a team, McPherson hit -.016, while the Coyotes finished the night with a .093 hitting percentage. KWU held an 11-10 advantage in total team blocks.
 
Leah Keller led KWU with 12 kills, while Pauline Yang paced the defense with 25 digs.
 
The Bulldogs return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 18 against Friends University. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. inside the McPherson Sport Center.
