McPherson, Kan. – The Bulldog offense was firing on all cylinders with a season-best .412 attacking percentage, as the McPherson College volleyball team swept the University of Saint Mary, 3-0 (25-20, 25-19, 25-20), Tuesday evening at the McPherson Sport Center.
The victory improves MC to 7-12 overall and 4-5 in Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference play, while the Spires fall to 4-13 overall and 2-6 in league action.
Senior
Kory Hiebert (Goessel, Kan.) led McPherson with 10 kills, a .643 hitting percentage and six block assists, while sophomore
Emily Girard (Osborne, Kan.) posted eight kills in the effort. Freshman
Tori Phelan (Rangely, Colo.) added seven kills. Senior
Brooke Wedel (Moundridge, Kan.) was on top of her game, coming up with a match-high 16 digs.
Freshman Shannon Anderson led USM with 10 kills. As a team, the Spires struggled offensively to a .194 hitting percentage.
McPherson dominated the opening set, including an 11-3 run to open the frame. USM cut the MC lead to 17-14, but a pair of Hiebert kills closed the frame, 25-20, in MC’s favor.
The two sides traded points to start set two before a 4-0 rally, including kills by Hiebert and senior
Brelynn Schloo (Salina, Kan.), pushed the MC lead out to 16-8. USM matched the Bulldog rally with one of their own, which cut the deficit to 16-12, but McPherson proved too strong down the stretch. Wedel closed the frame with a service ace and a Spire hitting error.
Much like set one, the Bulldogs dominated the third frame. MC hit a match-high .524 hitting percentage with 12 kills and one error on 21 attempts en route to the 25-20 win.
McPherson returns to action on Oct. 10 when they travel to Southwestern College. Match time is scheduled for 7 p.m. (CST) inside Stewart Field House.
