McPherson, Kan. – McPherson College’s guard
Samson Shivers (Houston, Texas) scored a season-high 26 points to pace a Bulldog offense that had four players end the night in double figures as MC edged Hastings College (Neb.), 87-82, Saturday evening at the McPherson Sport Center.
With the victory, McPherson improves to 6-0 on the season, while Hastings falls to 2-3. The loss was also the Broncos first defeat against a Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference opponent this season, as they knocked off Friends University and Sterling College earlier this fall.
In addition to Shivers, guard
Aaron Frazier (McPherson, Kan.) scored 16 points, while guard
Kenny Berry, Jr. (Lee's Summit, Mo.) added 15 and forward
Chris Crawford (McPherson, Kan.) scored 14, respectively. Shivers led McPherson with five 3-pointers, while Berry dished out a game-high eight assists. Frazier led all Bulldogs with seven rebounds.
In the first period, McPherson was forced into an early timeout as the Broncos utilized a 9-0 run to take an 18-12 lead at the 11:53 mark. However, the Bulldogs responded, aided by a pair of three-point plays from Berry and Shivers, to tie the score 18-18 less than a minute later. Another old-fashioned three-point play by Shivers gave MC their first lead, 20-18, since early in the game. The Bulldogs would grow that advantage to as much as eight, 38-30, entering the half.
The Bulldogs shot 35.9 percent (14-of-39) from the field and 75 percent (9-of-12) from the foul line in the first half.
McPherson seized the early momentum early in the second half with 14-9 run, capped by a Crawford layup off a Hastings turnover to earn a 52-39 lead with 16:44 left in regulation. Despite the lead and momentum, the Broncos crept their way back into the contest and eventually tied the game 59-59 following a 9-0 run. The two sides continued to battle, but the Bulldogs held a slim lead until eventually putting the game to rest with three throws.
Overall, McPherson shot 39.7 percent (27-of-68) from the field, 40.0 percent (8-of-20) from the 3-point line and a season-high 83.3 percent (25-of-30) from the foul line. Additionally, McPherson held a 41-37 edge in rebounds and forced 23 Bronco turnovers.
Brady Lollman led HC in scoring with 23 points on 6-of-17 shooting, while Tobin Reinward added 20 points, respectively.
The Bulldogs return to action on Tuesday, Nov. 15 when they host Central Christian College. Tipoff between the Bulldogs and Tigers is scheduled for 8 p.m. (CT) inside the McPherson Sport Center.
