Leavenworth, Kan. – The McPherson College baseball team dropped the final two of a weekend four game series at the University of Saint Mary Saturday at the USM Sports Complex. The Bulldogs were defeated in the opener 5-4 before falling in game two 6-3.
With the losses, McPherson falls to 0-26 overall and 0-18 in Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference action, while the Spires improve to 13-26 on the season and 6-10 in league play.
Freshman Daxton Deal led McPherson with three hits on the day, while freshman Aaron Evans and Taylor Werts registered a double a piece in the effort.
University of Saint Mary opened the game with a triple and a two-run home run to take the early 3-0 advantage. The Spires added another in the fourth on a Bulldog error to make it 4-0 after three innings.
However, the Bulldogs began to chip away in the sixth when freshman Dorian Shelton and Deal reached on back to back walks before Evans drilled a single through the hole at shortstop, which scored Shelton from second base (4-1).
The Bulldogs rallied with three runs in the top of the seventh to tie the game 4-4. Three straight singles by freshman Taylor Werts, sophomore William Waltenburg and freshman Matt Dixon gave the Bulldogs bases loaded with only one out. Freshman Brad Stanley took advantage of the opportunity with MC’s fourth consecutive single that scored Werts and freshman Landon Pecot and freshman Tino Stewart, who were pinch running, when the Spire centerfielder misplayed the ground ball.
However, USM loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning before scoring the winning run on a wild pitch.
Despite the loss, freshman pitcher Jacob Vogt allowed five runs (four earned) over 6.1 innings, while striking out two in the no decision.
The two teams traded runs in the second inning before the Bulldogs took a 2-1 lead on a Spire bases loaded walk. However, Saint Mary tallied two runs in the fourth and fifth to take the lead for good. Each side added a run in the sixth to make it a 6-3 final.
As a team, McPherson stranded 11 runners.
The Bulldogs return to action on April 12 when they host Ottawa University at the Grant Sports Complex. Game one of the doubleheader is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
