Lindsborg, Kan. – The McPherson College baseball team earned its first win since reinstating the program by splitting a doubleheader Saturday at Bethany College. The Bulldogs won the opener 8-4 before dropping game two 6-5.
The split give McPherson a 1-31 overall record and 1-21 mark in Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference action, while the Swedes go to 14-31 overall and 8-14 in KCAC play.
The Bulldogs received a solid start out of freshman Jacob Vogt (Drumright, Okla.), while taking advantage of four Swede errors to earn the win in game one. Vogt allowed four runs (one earned) on 10 hits, while striking out two and walking none in the complete game effort. The victory is the first win of Vogt’s collegiate career.
Offensively, McPherson was led by freshman infielder Chace Evans (White Oak, Texas), who finished game one 2-for-3 from the dish, including a double and two RBIs.
Bethany opened the scoring in game one with runs in the first and second to take an early 2-0 lead. However, McPherson bounced back with two in the four before each side added one more to make it 3-3 entering the final inning.
The Bulldogs bats exploded for five runs in the top of the seventh to take a 8-3 lead before Vogt shut down the Swedes in the bottom half to earn the win, 8-4.
In game two, Bethany again took the early advantage with a run in the bottom of the second. McPherson took a 3-1 lead after the top of the sixth, but BC answered back with three of their own in the bottom half. The two sides traded a pair of runs in the seventh as Bethany edged MC, 6-5.
Freshman Dalton Slavens (Glencoe, Okla.) took the loss despite a solid pitching performance. He allowed six runs on nine hits in 6.1 innings of work, including four strikeouts. Steven Paramore (Mansfield, Texas) paced the Bulldog offense with three hits, three RBIs and one run scored.
McPherson returns to action on Monday, April 25 when they host Bethany College in a doubleheader. Game one will begin at 3 p.m.
