Volleyball Finishes 1-3 at Hastings College Quality In Classic

Hastings, Neb. – The McPherson College volleyball team finished the weekend 1-3 at the Hastings College Quality Inn Classic. The Bulldogs fell to RV Morningside College (Iowa), 0-3, and No. 11 Doane College (Neb.), 0-3, on Friday before sweeping Dakota State (S.D.) and losing a five set heartbreaker against College of the Ozarks (Mo.).

With the losses, McPherson is now 2-7 on the year.

Against Morningside, junior outside hitter Natalie Boss (Waterville, Kan.) led MC with eight kills, while senior Kory Hiebert (Goessel, Kan.) and sophomore Emily Girard (Osborne, Kan.) recorded seven apiece. Senior libero Brooke Wedel (Moundridge, Kan.) tallied a team-high 16 digs in the effort. McPherson was out hit by the Broncos .284 to .153.

Doane came out strong against McPherson and cruised to a 25-17, 25-18, 25-13 victory. For the second consecutive match, Boss led the Bulldogs with six kills. As a team, McPherson hit only .082.

The Bulldogs bounced back on Saturday morning with a 25-22, 25-23, 25-12 victory against Dakota State. McPherson hit a season-high .309. Senior middle hitter Amy Neufeld (Hillsboro, Kan.) paced the Bulldogs with 14 kills, while Hiebert chipped in 12. Junior setter Shelby Yardley (Derby, Kan.) recorded her first double-double of the season with 23 assists and 15 digs.

McPherson failed to continue that momentum into their classic finale against College of the Ozarks. The Bulldogs battled hard, but fell 14-25, 25-19, 16-25, 25-23, 15-17. Four different Bulldogs tallied double-digit kills, including 15 from Neufeld and Hiebert. Additionally, Boss added 12 kills and junior Callie McCaffrey (Vona, Colo.) chipped in a season-best 14 kills. Wedel posted a team-best 39 digs.

McPherson returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 14, when the host Kansas Wesleyan University. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. (CST).
