McPherson, Kan. – McPherson College football gave up the ball four times in their 14-38 loss to the RV Ottawa University Braves on Saturday night. The defeat puts MC at 3-3 for the season and 3-2 against conference opponents.
While McPherson may have led nearly all of the offensive categories, it was the OU offense that seemed to have things under control in the clash of the KCAC opponents. The two teams traded possessions in the opening minutes with neither defense giving more than 10 yards besides an 82 yard drive by MC that ended in a blocked field goal attempt. The Braves were the first team to put points on the board with a carry by their leading rusher Dexter Hayes.
Ottawa got another chance for some points in the waning first quarter but place kicker Jeff Stamp missed on his field goal attempt. The Braves took over at the start of the second quarter and drove 50 yards for their second touchdown of the contest. On McPherson’s next possession, a
Havelock Pomele (San Jose, Calif.) fumble was returned for a touchdown and gave OU a 21-0 advantage.
The Braves controlled the game for most of the third quarter, scoring 10 points with the field goal coming in the opening seconds of the fourth period. MC took their first fourth quarter possession and drove right down and scored on an 18-yard pass from
Jake Snodgrass (Derby, Kan.) to tight-end
Paul Rotering (Colorado Springs, Colo.); Rotering had 70 yards receiving on that drive alone. An interception by Snodgrass gave Ottawa a short field for their final touchdown of the game, bringing the score to a 38-7 Brave lead.
Snodgrass found senior receiver
Julius Record (Detroit, Mich.) in the end-zone in the next possession to get MC to 14 points but it was too little too late as the 21 point Ottawa first half was too much for the Bulldogs to come back from. McPherson’s final possession of the game was ended by Snodgrass’ third interception of the game.
As a team, MC tallied 492 yards with 279 coming through the air and 213 on the ground. Snodgrass was 23-44 for 279 yards with three INTs and two touchdowns. He hit his favorite target Record 11 times for 92 yards and Rotering five times for 111 yards.
Pomele racked up 10 carries for 98 yards on the ground while Snodgrass recorded 92 of his own on 20 attempts.
Terrance Jones (Wichita, Kan.) took the ball six times and logged 26 yards.
Tyler Bruton (McPherson, Kan.) and
Micah Roehl (Dighton, Kan.) each tallied nine total tackles in Saturday’s loss, both having six solo stops with three assisted; Bruton had 1.5 sacks and four tackles for a loss while Roehl recorded one sack. As a team, MC totaled four sacks for 27 yards. Defensive back
Phillip Wilson (Long Beach, Calif.) made eight solo tackles, leading the team in that category.
The Bulldogs will get two weeks to fix their errors and miscues before their next competition which is scheduled to be against the Spires of Saint Mary. That game is set for October 27
th at McPherson Stadium at 1:30 p.m. (CT)
