North Newton, Kan. – Coach Quint and the Bulldog soccer team routed the Bethel College Threshers 8-0, solidifying McPherson’s fourth place standing in the KCAC rankings and Coach Quint’s 100
th victory. MC is now 11-5-1 and 6-3 in the conference.
McPherson men’s soccer knew they needed to win their match on Tuesday not only for seeding in the KCAC tournament but because their coach was only one win shy of 100 career collegiate victories and what could be sweeter than reaching that achievement against your Alma Mater? The team did their part, putting the ball in the back of the net eight times in the 90 minute contest while not allowing a single goal.
It may have taken 14 minutes for
Rafael Fuentes (Los Angeles, Calif.) to score MC’s first goal but the Bulldogs didn’t wait that long to do it again, scoring less than one minute later courtesy of
Johnny Nuthall (Reno, Nev.).
Sebastian Toro (Granada Hills, Calif.) joined the score-fest a few minutes later on
Tito Ruiz's (Weatherford, Texas) second assist.
Brooks Walsh (Valencia, Calif.) and Toro each scored one more time before the end of the first period, giving McPherson a 5-0 advantage at halftime.
In the second half with a good majority of second-stringers on the field for McPherson, the scoring didn’t stop.
Erik Ramos (Dallas, Texas) put in the first goal of the half in the 49
th minute. He was followed by
Chase Menzie (Maize, Kan.) scoring on a pass from
Josh Aubuchon (Rose Hill, Kan.). Ruiz, after assisting on two goals, finally got his chance to be on the receiving side of an assist and smashed in the team’s eighth and final goal off of a ball from Ramos.
The Bulldogs bombarded the Thresher defense as they put up 28 total shots and placed 16 on goal; at one point in the game, McPherson had eight total shots and six goals.
Andrew Suits (Henderson, Nev.), Toro and Nuthall each shot the ball four times to lead the squad. Five MC players recorded two shots on target in the win.
Fernando Gonzalez (Dallas, Texas) added another clean-sheet to his statistics after making three saves and shutting out the Threshers for 90 minutes.
MC will now host Bethany College for the first round of the KCAC Tournament. That match is set for November 3
rd at 2:00 p.m. (CT) at McPherson Stadium. The winner of the game will travel to Salina, Kan., to take on the top-seeded Kansas Wesleyan Coyotes on November 7
th.
