Box Score
Baldwin City, Kan. – A solid shooting performance by NAIA D-I RV Baker University and the exact opposite for NAIA D-II No. 18 McPherson College gave the BU Wildcats the 65-48 victory on Saturday. MC is now 4-3 this season after going 1-1 in the Baker Classic.
It took about five minutes for the Bulldogs to get on the board in game two of the classic and while they were trying to get their first bucket, BU got up by 11 points. Less than four minutes later, a 15-1 run by McPherson gave MC what turned out to be their largest lead of the game at 15-12. The score stayed close for the next ten minutes but a 12-2 run by the Wildcats gave Baker a 35-25 halftime advantage.
MC hit on 7-of-17 for their two-point shots but a 3-of-12 half from behind the arc gave the Bulldogs a 34.5 shooting percentage from the field. Baker shot the same percentage from the three but was 13-of-20 from the rest of the floor on their home court. Only eight free throws were attempted by the two teams combined.
The second half started with a BU bucket but a 7-0 run by McPherson brought them within five and forced a timeout by the Wildcats. After the break, nine-straight points were scored by Baker and from then on, they dictated the rest of the game, staying up by double-digits for the final 15 minutes.
The shooting for McPherson didn’t improve in the second period as they hit on just 8-of-27 from the floor; they ended the game shooting 32.1%. A 4-of-8 free throw performance in the second period gave Mac a 6-of-10 night from the stripe. BU shot a little worse in the second half than they did in the first but still made 40% of their shots, giving them a 25-of-53 night. McPherson committed fewer turnovers than Baker but had a lower assist-to-turnover ratio.
Samson Shivers (Houston, Texas) had a rough day from the field, only hitting 4-of-14 all of which were three balls giving him his team-leading 12 points. Junior transfer
Dante Lee (Shawnee Mission, Kan.) scored 11 on 3-of-9 from the floor and 4-of-4 from the charity stripe.
Devirous Johnson (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and
Mason Hewitt (Norwich, Kan.) each came off the bench and put in eight points.
Surprisingly, Baker only had one athlete who scored double figures; Ben Steinlage went 8-of-11 from the floor and 4-of-5 from the stripe for 21 points. Two Wildcats, Kevin Lysaught and Baba Diallo, scored nine points apiece for BU.
Another classic awaits McPherson but not until November 23
rd and 24
th. The team travels to Columbia College in Columbia, Missouri for games against the Hannibal-LaGrange Trojans and the Columbia College Cougars on Friday at 6:00 p.m. (CT) and Saturday at 3:00 p.m., respectively.
