McPherson Kan. – The McPherson College Baseball Team played at home in a weekend series with the Bobcats of Peru State this Saturday and Sunday, playing a doubleheader each day. The Bulldogs went 0-4 in the series, losing 4-11 and 2-18 on the 25th and 6-18 and 2-9 on the 26th.
Game One: McPherson 4 Peru State 11
MC opened up their series with Taylor Werts on the mound; he gave up 9 runs on 10 hits in his five innings pitched and had five strikeouts and five walks in the 29 batters faced. Curt Compagnone came in relief in the sixth inning to finish out the game for the Bulldogs; he turned in two strikeouts, earned runs and hits.
McPherson’s bats got going early as they scored two runs in the opening inning. Unfortunately, those were the only two runs for MC until the sixth when they were already down seven. Trey DeRouen was the leading batter for Mac as he had three hits in as many at bats including a homerun; he knocked in two and scored twice himself. Brad Stanley also scored two times and had a couple of hits as well.
Peru State went through three pitchers in the opening game, Will Scott (five innings), Austin Parker (zero innings) and Tyler Ozborn (2 innings). Scott gave up two of the McPherson’s scored runs but recorded three strikeouts. Parker had a rough go, facing three batters and allowing two runs. Ozborn finished the game for Peru, tallying 4 strikeouts during his time at the mound.
The Bobcats knocked in three runs in the first inning of the weekend to get them on track, they scored in all but two innings with eight of Peru’s players grabbing a hit in the first game. Jonathan Castillo recorded 4 hits, all of which were singles, in his five at bats.
Game Two: McPherson 2 Peru State 8
In the second matchup of the day, inning number two was a particularly difficult inning for Mac pitcher Casey McConnell as he gave up 10 runs on 10 hits and then was benched. Compagone once again, came in to take over but only lasted two and two-thirds innings himself as he gave up five runs and eight hits in the 18 batters faced. The third pitchers for MC was Jeremy Moore who came in at the start of the fifth and allowed three runs in his three innings.
Hits were not as plentiful for the Bulldogs in this contest, they had two, coming off the bats of Slaton and Victorjose Betancourt. They found other means to score, however, as in the sixth inning McPherson recorded their only runs and did so without a single hit.
Peru once again used three different pitchers in the seven inning game with Tim Crawford getting the start, Ryan Brabowski coming in relief in the sixth and after lasting only seven batters and two outs, then was replaced by Lincoln Mansch.
Peru State, had different fortunes from MC when it came to hits, tallying 24 for the game; six Bobcats had three hits and four others knocked one or two. Jeff Eubank led his team with seven RBIs off of three hits in four at bats.
Game Three: McPherson 6 Peru State 18
Every McPherson player who visited the plate got a hit in the first game on Sunday afternoon. The Bulldogs recorded 12 hits in the contest with Betancourt, Frank Mora and Leander Greene hitting two apiece. Werts led the team in RBIs with two on just one hit.
Stephen Zike got the start for MC and lasted four and two-thirds innings, giving up 16 runs, 14 earned, on 19 hits. Mora took over in the middle of the fourth and finished the game, allowing just two runs.
Peru State got off to a quick start, scoring six runs in the opening inning; the team had 18 run on 20 hits. Eubank was the leading hit-man for the Bobcats, putting the ball in play in each of his five plate appearances including one homerun. Kyle Fredrickson also went 100 percent for the day, smacking the ball four times for three RBIs and a homerun as well.
Bryan Duncan went to the mound first for Peru and lasted five innings, allowing three runs and recording five strikeouts. Aubrey Dezarn replaced Duncan and gave up three in his two innings pitched.
Game Four: McPherson 2 Peru State 9
In the final game of the series, MC gave the ball to Dion Herron to start the game; he went six and a third, giving up five earned runs on 10 hits and had four strikeouts. Stanley finished off the seventh inning for the Bulldogs, permitting four runs from the six batters faced.
Six McPherson players recorded a hit in the contest; unfortunately they each had only one hit gaining just one RBI compliments of Mora. They did do a nice job of base running, gaining eight stolen bases.
The Bobcats went through three pitchers for the third time in the series. Phillip Lial lasted five innings, allowing McPherson’s two runs before being exchanged for Tim Patterson who went one inning and was relieved by Danny Borst for the final inning of the game.
14 hits were tallied by Peru in their 32 at bats; Derrick Voigt and Jonathan Arche each grabbed three of those hits for three combined RBIs. This was the only game of the weekend where Peru State did not record a home run.
The Bulldogs are off now until March 5th, when Robert Morris University comes to town for a 6 p.m. (CT) game at Light Capital Diamond in McPherson.
