McPherson Baseball Splits Series with RMU

McPherson, Kan. – The Bulldog baseball team split their two games against Robert Morris University on Saturday, winning the first 4-2 and dropping the second 15-16.  Both games were played at the Hobart-Detter Field in Hutchinson, Kan.

Game One: McPherson 4 – Robert Morris 2

Both teams came out of the gate hot, earning runs in the opening inning with McPherson grabbing two and RMU hitting around one.  MC ended the game with four runs, despite only having three hits.  Dorian Shelton, Brad Stanley and Trey DeRouen each recorded one; DeRouen had two RBIs and the lone homerun of the game. 

Taylor Werts pitched the complete seven inning game for the Bulldogs, tallying seven strikeouts and only two walks.  He faced 28 batters and only allowed five hits and two runs.

Robert Morris had their five hits off of four players; James Dawson was the sole Eagle with two hits including one of RMU’s two doubles.

The loss for the game went to Patrick Murray who pitched the complete game, surrendering four runs, three earned, and six walks.  He struck out eight and logged three fly outs and one groundout in the 24 batters he faced.

Game Two: McPherson 15 – Robert Morris 16

Game two was filled with much more offense; McPherson scored in every inning except for the fifth.  The Bulldogs got up 12-5 but could not stop the five and six run innings from the Eagles in the bottom of the fifth and sixth.  MC put up three runs in the top of the seventh but fell one run short of forcing RMU to bat in the bottom of the inning.

In the second contest, McPherson recorded 15 hits, five times the number of their first game.  Three balls each were hit into play by DeRouen, Frank Mora and Jordan Slaton.  Jeremy Moore tallied four RBIs to lead the Bulldogs.  MC was able to draw nine walks for the game and had a total of 35 at bats.

Logan Zike and Dion Herron each pitched three innings with the loss going to Herron.  Zike started the game, lasting three innings, giving up five earned runs on seven hits with only one strikeout.  Herron came in relief and finished the game, allowing 11 runs, seven earned, with five walks and no strikeouts.

Robert Morris had two players with three hits, Dawson and James Kollker, and three others with two; four Eagles tallied one hit.  Dawson knocked in three with his bats of the ball to lead the team in RBIs.  RMU drew three walks and only struck out once.

The Eagles went through four pitchers in the matchup.  Jake Yukich got the starting nod and lasted two and a third before being replaced by Joel Morales.  Yukich gave up five runs on six hits and recorded six strikeouts.  Morales pitched two innings and charted six earned runs coming off of seven hits before Mike Kelly came in relief in the fifth and lasted two and a third before RMU sent out Vince Ramirez to finish the game.  Kelly surrendered two runs off of two hits and Ramirez allowed two before grabbing the final out of the seven inning contest.

MC is now off until March 16th when they will face Sterling College to open up conference play.  The game will be played in McPherson at 1 p.m. (CT) at Light Capital Stadium.
