Box Score 4 McPherson, Kan. – McPherson baseball started their 2012 conference play on Friday against Sterling College. The two teams played four games of seven innings the past two days with the Warriors grabbing all four victories.
Friday, Game One: McPherson 8 – Sterling 18

MC opened up the weekend series with a 10-run loss to Sterling, losing 8-18. Four Bulldogs earned two hits with Jeremy Moore knocking in three runs to lead McPherson in RBIs. Brad Stanley, Jordan Slaton and Taylor Werts were the other ‘Dogs with two hits.
Curt Compagnone was the starting pitcher for MC and recorded one strikeout, 15 runs, 12 earned, in his five innings pitched. Stanley came in relief and finished the game, allowing three earned runs on twelve batters in two innings.
The Warriors were led in hitting by Jared Forbush who logged four, batting in five runs. As a team, SC had 18 hits with Andrew Clark and Joe Williams each having three.
Four Sterling pitchers were needed to finish off the Bulldogs. Levi LaBass got the starting nod and lasted five innings, surrendering four earned runs, seven hits and four walks. Matt Eshleman came in relief for LaBass and went one inning, allowing one run and two walks before being replaced by Brock Moss who pitched a third of an inning and gave up three. Andrew Clark finished the game for the Warriors grabbing the final two outs of the game.
Friday, Game Two: McPherson 1 – Sterling 22

After all the runs the Bulldogs scored in the opening game, they struggled to score any more in the second game of the double header, only hitting around one. MC struggled from the plate in this matchup as well, only grabbing six; each of McPherson’s hits were recorded by different athletes; Moore batted in the lone run.
For the second game of the day, McPherson sent out Casey McConnell and he pitched five innings, allowing 14 runs and four walks while failing to strikeout one. Stanley, once again, came in to close out the game for the Bulldogs, giving up nine earned runs and three walks in his 14 batters faced.
The bats were rolling for Sterling as they recorded as many hits as they did runs, 22. Two players had four, one had three, and three more had two. Right fielder Daniel Hall hit in eight runs on his four hits and reached base each time up.
Erelio Mesa was sent to the mound to start the game for SC and nearly pitched the whole game, going six innings and only allowing one run in the second. He logged 11 strikeouts before Brennan Stelling came in relief to finish out the game. Stelling gave up two hits in his one inning pitched.
Saturday, Game One: McPherson 2 – Sterling 21

In their first game out on Saturday, McPherson was only able to produce six hits and two runs, not coming until the sixth inning. Werts and Trey DeRouen each hit two balls into play for MC; Slaton and Leander Greene each hit in one run.
The starting pitcher for the Bulldogs was Werts and he pitched five innings, surrendering 17 runs, five walks and 15 hits. He recorded two strikeouts, three fly outs and three groundouts as well as the loss for the contest. DeRouen relieved Werts in the sixth, allowing four hits, four runs and two walks.
Sterling was able to score more runs, 21, than they had hits, 19, thanks to their seven walks drawn. SC had two players with three hits, Matthew Krause and Forbush. 10 other Warriors had hits in their 19 point victory.
Daniel Cloteaux visited the mound first for SC and pitched five innings, giving up three hits but no runs and only one walk. Chris Trujillo came in relief and gave up both of McPherson’s runs in his one inning pitched. Austin Wirtas preserved the game for Sterling, pitching one inning.
Saturday, Game Two: McPherson 4 – Sterling 11

After getting up 3-2 in the top of the fifth inning, MC allowed eight in the bottom of the inning to drop their fourth straight to Sterling. Dion Herron was the sole pitcher for MC as he recorded his first complete game of the season. Herron, in his six innings pitched, allowed 11 runs, five earned, 15 hits and one walk.
The hitting woes came back for the Bulldogs as they were only able to grab five. Shelton was the lone MC player with two hits, three others recorded one. DeRouen brought around two Bulldogs to lead McPherson in RBIs; Werts and Michael Ramos had the other two runs for MC.
Danny Valenzuela started the game pitching for the Warriors in their final contest of the weekend. He pitched four and a third innings, allowing three earned runs, three walks and three hits. Tyler Deutscher was the first replacement, coming in during the fifth inning to pitch one and two thirds. Deutscher threw 39 pitches, recording four strikeouts and two walks before being relieved by Mike Barro in the seventh inning. Barro surrendered one earned run in the five batters he faced.
Sterling had another good game hitting the ball, knocking 15 into play. Shey Miller led the Warriors with three and four more had two. Joe Williams earned three RBIs coming off his homerun shot to lead the team in runs batted in.
The next set of conference games for McPherson will be on March 23
