Bulldogs Grab First Win of Season

Box Score McPherson, Kan. – The Bulldog baseball team defeated cross-town rivals Central Christian College 9-1 to record their first win of the season.  The bats for McPherson were on from the start and the pitching held Central to 5 hits.

Taylor Werts (Mansfield, Texas) logged the W for MC after his six innings pitched where he gave up one run on four hits.  Werts had five strikeouts, nine groundouts and two fly outs; he threw the ball 88 times.  Stephen Zike (Frisco, Texas) came into the game at the start of the seventh inning and didn’t allow a hit in his two innings.  Dion Herron (Kansas City, Mo.) closed out the contest for McPherson, pitching the ball 14 times giving up one hit.

The Bulldogs scored in their first five innings, jumping out to a quick 1-0 lead in the first off a Trey DeRouen (Abbeville, La.) 375 foot homerun.  Jeremy Moore (McPherson, Kan.) and Werts recorded three hits apiece with Werts batting in two.  Brad Stanley (Coffeyville, Kan.) was the RBI king with his three off just one hit.  McPherson charted 11 hits on the day including two doubles and a triple.

Central Christian went through three pitchers as well with Channing Newland getting the starting nod and lasting three innings, giving up six runs on seven hits.  Chris Trenckmann came in relief and logged three innings and three runs allowed.  The final pitcher for the Tigers was Justin Gilmore who went two innings without surrendering a run in the eight batters he faced.

CCC struggled from the plate, charting only five hits in the game with their lone run coming in the fourth inning on a Steven Abbott single to shallow center.  Aaron Roberts, Shadow Stephenson, Jay Banks, and Troy Richter each had one hit as well. 

The Bulldogs will stay at home for their next contest, which will be against Robert Morris University who will travel to McPherson on Monday the fifth of March for a 6 p.m. (CT) game.
