McPherson, Kan. – After a couple of rain postponements, the four-game series of baseball games between McPherson College and the Tabor College Blue Jays were completed on Monday, March 26 and Tuesday, March 27.
McPherson dropped all four matchups, losing at home 2-21, 2-6 on Monday and 4-5, 0-12 at Tabor on Tuesday.
Monday, Game One: McPherson 2 – Tabor 21

In their first of four games against the Blue Jays, McPherson came out slow and TC took advantage, grabbing three runs in each of the first two innings. The Bulldogs earned both their runs in the third, off of just one hit, which made it a 2-6 game; the third was the only inning in which Tabor failed to score any runs.
Frank Mora (Houston, Texas) led the Bulldogs with two hits, including the single that scored MC’s runs. Taylor Werts (Mansfield, Texas) added a double to wind out the hits for McPherson.
The starting pitcher for MC was Curt Compagnone (Salina, Kan.) and he pitched six innings, allowing 18 earned runs off of 20 Tabor hits. He recorded four strikeouts, three groundouts and seven fly outs. Compagnone surrendered two walks, eight doubles and five homeruns. Stephen Zike (Frisco, Texas) was the replacement sent in to start the seventh inning and gave up three runs from three hits in his six batters faced.
Spencer Putman went five-for-five, including a homerun, to lead TC in hits. Tyler Kozolowski and Adam McCormick added four apiece, gaining four and five RBIs, respectively; McCormick led the team in RBIs while Kozolowski hit two over the fence.
The first pitcher sent to the mound for Tabor was Anthony Mendoza who went five innings before his replacement, Alex Cole, came in. Mendoza logged the two earned runs and nine strikeouts in the 22 batters he faced.
Monday, Game Two: McPherson 2 – Tabor 6

After allowing 21 runs in the first game of the day, the pitchers of MC reeled the number in as they only gave up six in the final game of the day. Casey McConnell (Hutchinson, Kan.) was the first pitcher in the game for McPherson and pitched four and two thirds innings, surrendering five earned runs on just one hit. He also walked seven, struck out six and allowed one grand slam. Dion Herron (Kansas City, Mo.) finished the fifth inning for the Bulldogs, forcing a groundout from his lone batter. Zike closed out the last two innings, giving up one run off of two hits.
MC put the ball into play one more time than they did in the opening game, earning four hits. Mora, once again, led the team with two, one of which was a home run; Jeremy Moore (McPherson, Kan.) and Dorian Shelton (Kansas City, Mo.) had the other two.
David Ormiston was the sole pitcher for Tabor and allowed two runs coming off of four hits. He struck out 10 of the 27 batters faced.
Three Blue Jays made up their three hits with Art Corona, McCormick and Putman each having one; Corona’s grand slam was good for four runs.
Tuesday, Game One: McPherson 4 – Tabor 5

The opening game of day two was McPherson’s to lose. MC was up 4-3 going into the bottom of the seventh when a misplayed grounder allowed Tabor to score two runs to close out the game. Only four hits were tallied by the Bulldogs and Mora, for the third straight game, grabbed two. Trey DeRouen (Abbeville, La.) and Moore were the other two that put the ball into play.
Werts got the starting nod for McPherson and recorded his second complete game of the season. He gave up five runs, three earned, one walk and eight hits which included one homerun. Werts also recorded three strikeouts, five fly outs and six groundouts.
Corona led Tabor in batting with three hits, all of which were singles; five other Blue Jays had one. Cody Wheeler brought around two runs as did Koby Temple.
For the second straight game, TC only used one pitcher. Nicholas Reif recorded the complete game as well as six strikeouts, two fly outs and seven groundouts. He gave up four runs off of four hits in the 27 batters he faced.
Tuesday, Game Two: McPherson 0 – Tabor 12

In the final game of the series, MC had a hard time putting the bat on the ball as they were only able to earn three hits, all coming from different players. Werts, Michael Ramos (Sachse, Texas) and Victorjose Betancourt (Margarita Island, Venezuela) were the three ‘Dogs making positive contact with the ball.
Herron was sent to the mound for the last game against Tabor and surrendered 11 earned runs coming off of 13 hits including three doubles, one triple and one homerun. He recorded three strikeouts, groundouts and fly outs in his four innings pitched. Brad Stanley came in relief and closed out the game, giving up one earned run from three hits.
Tabor once again had no problem putting the ball in play as they achieved 16 hits in their 33 at bats. Temple led the team with three while three others had two and seven more recorded one hit.
Four pitchers were used in the closing game of the series. Matt Lambert started it for Tabor and pitched three innings, allowing one hit before being replaced by Zach Richert in the fourth. Richert pitched two innings and was relieved by Darius Iacono who went one inning. Nate Percy finished the game for the Blue Jays.
McPherson will be back on the road March 31st as they travel to Salina to take on the Kansas Wesleyan Coyotes in a double-header on Saturday. April 1st will bring KWU to Light Capital Stadium in McPherson, Kansas for a home double-header against the Bulldogs.
