McPherson, Kan. – McPherson College went 0-4 against Kansas Wesleyan in their weekend series. MC was outhit 25-44 and outscored 10-49 in the four-game set. The Bulldogs are now 4-21 overall and 0-12 in the KCAC.
Saturday, Game One: McPherson 2 – Kansas Wesleyan 13

The first game of the series went the way of Kansas Wesleyan as they defeated MC 13-2. KWU scored in each inning of the game, while McPherson got their two runs in the fifth, taking advantage of the lone error of the Coyotes. The Bulldogs were only able to grab three hits in the game as Dorian Shelton (Kansas City, Mo.), Frank Mora (Houston, Texas) and Jeremy Moore (McPherson, Kan.) each achieved one.
Stephen Zike (Frisco, Texas) started game one for McPherson and pitched the complete game, giving up 13 runs, 11 earned, 10 hits and three walks. He logged two strikeouts in the 35 batters he faced.
Kansas Wesleyan put up 13 runs on 10 hits coming from six players. Jon Mihic led the Coyotes with three hits, Jordan Bain and Adam Jones each had two. Jones and Chad Zuniga each had three RBIs to top the list for KWU.
The starting nod for Kansas Wesleyan went to Matt Royal who pitched six innings, giving up both of McPherson’s runs. He tallied 12 strikeouts and only one walk in the 24 batters he faced. Lance Johnson closed out the game for KWU, pitching to three batters and striking out all three.
Saturday, Game Two: McPherson 1 – Kansas Wesleyan 12

Game two didn’t fare much better for McPherson as they were only able to score one run despite having 10 hits. Four Bulldogs recorded two hits in the game; Taylor Werts (Mansfield, Texas), Jordan Slaton (Dodge City, Kan.), Mora and Shelton. Victorjose Betancourt (Margarita Island, Venezuela) and Mora were the other players to hit one.
Curt Compagnone (Salina, Kan.) was the first pitcher MC sent to the mound and he pitched four innings before Brad Stanley (Coffeyville, Kan.) came in relief. Compagnone recorded two strikeouts, three walks and eight earned runs off of six hits. Stanley surrendered four runs, two earned, coming from four hits and two walks.
Just like McPherson, Kansas Wesleyan earned 10 hits in the game but they were able to string theirs together for 12 runs in 28 at bats. Bryce Basinger led the Coyotes with three while two others had two and three more grabbed one.
KWU sent Connor Freeman to face the Bulldogs and he pitched for six innings, allowing 10 hits and McPherson’s solo run. He recorded nine strikeouts and four walks in the 30 batters he faced. Dean Whiteside relieved Freeman and closed out the game in 11 pitches.
Sunday, Game One: McPherson 3 – Kansas Wesleyan 19

The hitting woes returned for McPherson in their first game Sunday as they were only able to grab five hits in the contest. Leander Greene (Argonia, Kan.) led the Bulldogs with two and also recorded a stolen base. Trey DeRouen (Abbeville, La.), Moore and Betancourt were the others with a hit.
Werts was McPherson’s first pitcher of the day; he surrendered 12 runs, 10 earned, 12 hits and six walks. Werts pitched for four innings before being relieved by Stanley who allowed seven runs, five earned, and four hits.
Kansas Wesleyan exploded for 18 hits in the opening game of the day; they also scored in every inning except for the seventh. Jordan Bain, Brandon Trodick and Jeff Lucero each recorded three; Lucero led the Coyotes with four RBIs, three of which came off his three-run homerun in the sixth.
KWU sent out Brandon Monahan to take on the Bulldogs in game one; he pitched five innings, allowing three unearned runs and two walks while grabbing eight strikeouts. Matt Rose was the first pitcher off the bench for the Coyotes and he lasted one inning before Orlando Cano came in at the top of the seventh to finish off the game.
Sunday, Game Two: McPherson 4 – Kansas Wesleyan 5

The final game of the weekend series was a nail-biter. McPherson jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first inning courtesy of a DeRouen two-run homerun. Kansas Wesleyan battled back to tie the game at 2-2 at the end of five innings. MC grabbed the lead again, 3-2, thanks to a RBI double in the bottom of the sixth by Mora. The Coyotes seized their first lead of the game at 5-3 after a three-run homerun in the top of the seventh. McPherson loaded up the bases with no outs but was only able to bring around one run before a controversial double-play call ended the game.
The Bulldogs put up seven hits, and for the first time all weekend, took advantage of a couple errors to nearly pull out the victory. Werts and Mora each picked up two hits while three others earned one. DeRouen led the team with two RBIs from his first inning two-run shot.
Dion Herron (Kansas City, Mo.) pitched his second complete game of the year for McPherson, logging six strikeouts, four groundouts and seven fly outs. He surrendered five earned runs off of six hits including two homeruns and five walks.
Only six hits were recorded by KWU in their fourth victory of the weekend. Colton Zebe led the Coyotes with two including his three-run homerun in the seventh; four others tallied one hit.
Cano started game two for Kansas Wesleyan. He pitched five and a third innings, giving up three runs, five hits and one walk before Lance Johnson came in relief to close out the sixth. Colton Zebe moved over from his first base position to close out the game and earn the save for the Coyotes.
McPherson next plays on April 5th at home against the University of Saint Mary. The game will be played in Light Capital Stadium at 5 p.m. (CT)
