McPherson, Kan. – The McPherson College women’s tennis team opened conference play hosting the Tabor College Lady Blue Jays. The Lady Bulldogs played tough and had their opportunities but could not capitalize as the Lady Blue Jays came away on top 7-2.
In doubles, McPherson had an opportunity to seize a 2-1 lead at number two and number three doubles, but strong and steady play by Tabor turned away the Lady Bulldogs and gave the Lady Jays a sweep of the doubles points and a 3-0 lead going into singles.
In singles, senior Wrylie Finkle (Wichita, Kan.), fending off an injury, came off a bit short against Tabor’s Amanda Fabor falling 7-5, 6-2. A bright spot for the Bulldogs was play from freshman Miranda Gaddis (Claflin, Kan.) and senior Katie Doffing (Conway Springs, Kan.). Gaddis and Doffing helped McPherson avoid the sweep by winning their matches at number five and number six singles, respectively. Both players took the first set, dropped the second set, and came back from behind to win the match tie-breakers to give McPherson two points and avoid the sweep.
McPherson has a day off before traveling to Wichita to take on Friends University in their second KCAC match. Play is set to begin at 3:00 p.m. (CT) Monday.
