York, Neb. – The men’s soccer team at McPherson College defeated York College 2-1 in an overtime game in York, Neb., on Saturday. The Bulldogs are now 1-0 while the Panthers are 2-1.
After a line drive shot from York College’s Carlos Fernandez in the 41st minute, MC saw themselves down 0-1 heading into the locker room in what was a slow-paced first-half. The day got worse for the Bulldogs when a knockdown by senior midfielder Brooks Walsh warranted his second yellow card, dismissing him from the rest of the game and forcing McPherson to finish the game with 10 players.
A lengthy throw in by Oscar Cortez in the 84th minute gave defender Michael Phillips his first goal of the season and a tie ballgame for the Bulldogs, forcing overtime. Nearly nine minutes into the first overtime, a foul by York gave McPherson and midfielder Eddie Garcia a free-kick from 30 yards out on the right hash. The sophomore took full advantage of this opportunity and placed the ball in the upper right corner of the net for the game winner.
McPherson came out the victor thanks to what seemed like a one sided second half where MC outshot York 13-4 while playing a good deal of time a man down.
As a team, McPherson had 22 total shots, eight on target; Cortez led the Bulldogs in shots taken with five, four of which were saved by the goalie.
Junior transfer Taylor Parrott played the full 98:58 in the goal for MC, saving the ball six times.
McPherson men’s soccer takes to the pitch again on September 8th during their weekend road trip to Iowa where they will face Briar Cliff University on Saturday and Morningside College Sunday. The matchup against BCU will take place at 2:15 p.m. (CT)
