McPherson, Kan. – After one of the lowest scoring first halves in recent memory, the Lady Bulldogs pulled out a squeaker against inner-county rival Bethany College. A strong showing from the free throw line helped get McPherson the 56-46 victory.
McPherson dug themselves into a hole early, allowing Bethany to get up by six points in the first few minutes; an 8-0 run by the Lady ‘Dogs immediately following, gave them a two-point lead midway through the half. The two squads traded baskets for the rest of the period and headed into their respective locker rooms tied at 19.
It was an ugly half of shooting all around, MC made just 1-of-13 from downtown and shot a 24.1 field goal percentage for the game’s first 20 minutes. The Lady Swedes didn’t have much more luck as they converted on 6-of-22 from the floor with zero three-point makes; 12 trips to the free throw line, where they hit seven, kept BC in the first half.
Mac controlled the first part of the second period, holding the lead by a small margin. After Bethany jumped in front for a couple of minutes, the Lady Bulldogs took the advantage for good with right over 10 minutes remaining on the clock. MC would increase the score margin to double figures a few times in the waning moments of the contest. Thanks to back-to-back free throws by
Kaylee Cramer (Dighton, Kan.), McPherson ended the game up 10 as they won 56-46.
A 42.3 field goal percentage was totaled by McPherson in the second half as they drained 11-of-26 from the floor; an incredible 13-of-15 from the charity stripe helped Mac maintain their advantage over Bethany. Only four three pointers were shot by MC, a stark difference from their 13 first half attempts, two made it through the hoop, both by
Cheyenne Eisenhour (Stafford, Kan.). BC went 10-of-28 from the field and was 2-of-3 from distance; just six free throws were attempted by the Swedes, they made five.
McPherson ended the contest scoring on 18-of-55 field goals; they had a rough 17.6 three point percentage as only 3-of-17 found the bottom of the net. The Bulldogs improved their season free throw percentage as they bucketed 17-of-21 from the stripe. Bethany converted on 16-of-50 from the floor including two three-point baskets; 66.7 percent of their 18 shots from the charity stripe made their way through the bucket. MC outrebounded the Swedes 30-to-28 and pulled down 11 offensive boards. Eight steals were tallied by Mac as they forced 14 Bethany turnovers. The Lady Bulldogs got a lot of help from their bench as the non-starters scored 26 of the team’s 56 points.
Tayler Puttergill (Tryon, Neb.) had a near double-double as she scored 19 points on 6-of-11 from the field and 7-of-8 from the stripe; she also tallied a team-high nine rebounds. Eisenhour and
Bailey Brown (Glen Elder, Kan.) nearly made it to double digits as they scored nine and eight, respectively; Eisenhour brought down seven rebounds while Brown led the team in assists with three.
Tanya Garner led the Swedes in both points and rebounds, grabbing 12 boards and scoring 15 points; she made 9-of-13 from the stripe for the majority of her total. Alex DeLong came in off the bench and scored eight points which was the second highest on the team; she was 4-of-5 from the field.
