McPherson, Kan. – The opening period was owned by the men's soccer team of McPherson College as they scored three of their four goals, leading to the 4-1 win over Bethel. The 'Dogs are now 4-5 for the year and 1-0 in the KCAC.
"We played well right out of the gate after a long layoff which was nice to see," said Coach Doug Quint. "We stayed organized defensively and really moved the ball well on the offensive end. This was definitely a nice way to start off conference play."
Johnny Nuthall (Reno, Nev.) scored first for Mac as he put in a pass from Oscar Cortez (Dallas, Texas) less than five minutes into the contest. Nearly 20 minutes later and the two switched roles as Cortez blasted one of Nuthall's passes past the keeper. Nuthall wasn't done scoring as he inched closer to a hat-trick, scoring on a ball from the Frenchman Kevin Aka (Paris, France).
McPherson took their 3-0 lead into the locker room and came out in the second half looking to extend their advantage. Tito Ruiz (Weatherford, Texas) did just that as he put MC ahead 4-0 after he kicked in a Yosafat Figueroa (Sacramento, Calif.) pass with 36:12 left in the game.
The Threshers finally got on the board with 28 minutes remaining but the Bulldog D stood firm and preserved the win for the Bulldogs.
Out of the 30 blasts towards the goal, Nuthall took a team-high seven shots, placing three on frame. Oscar Cortez (Dallas, Texas) and Cortez each took five attempts putting three apiece on target.
Taylor Parrott (Wichita, Kan.) logged three saves and one goal allowed in his 90 minutes between the pipes.
Due to scheduling conflicts, McPherson won't play KWU until the 10th of October; the 8:30 p.m. (CT) kickoff is scheduled to be played at Salina Stadium.
