McPherson, Kan. – The Lady Bulldog volleyball team ventured up to Leavenworth, Kansas to take on the Spires of the University of Saint Mary. It took four sets but McPherson came out on top 3-1, pushing their record to 12-13 and 4-5 in the conference.
The first two games went rather quickly for MC as they took down the Spires 25-15 and 25-18; in the second set, McPherson put together an 8-1 run to finish things off.
USM fought back in the third set, getting up early and holding off the Bulldogs to push it to a fourth after their 25-18 win. In the final game, the Lady Spires took another early advantage but an 8-0 rally by Mac put them ahead and from there the 'Dogs coasted to a 25-20 victory.
Tori Phelan (Rangely, Colo.) put on a hitting clinic as she totaled 19 kills on 35 swings. Sophomore
Cortlyne Huppe (Florence, Colo.) posted 15 on her 23 attempts and also logged a block.
Taylor Johnson (Valley Center, Kan.) recorded 11 kills and 10 digs in the victory.
The senior setter
Rachel Phillips (Maize, Kan.) ended the four-set match with 48 assists, eight digs and two kills.
Emily Warner (Wichita, Kan.), the team's libero, had a team-high 14 digs.
McPherson will take on Sterling College at home on October 12
th. The 12:00 p.m. (CT) match will start the second round of conference play.
