McPherson, Kan. – For the third-straight game, the Lady Bulldogs of McPherson College defeated a KCAC squad by double figures. On Thursday, it was the Sterling College Warriors that took the loss as Mac triumphed 76-63.
The game started slow and stayed tight throughout the first few minutes but a 12-1 run by the 'Dogs broke things wide open and gave them an 11-point advantage by the midway part of the period. The lead stayed in double-digits for most of the remaining minutes with the largest lead of 16 coming with 15 seconds to go in the half. McPherson headed into the locker room with a 37-24 advantage.
MC hit on over 50 percent of their shots in the first period with 14-of-26 falling including 5-of-10 from behind the arc; they were just 4-of-7 from the foul line. Sterling made 9-of-25 from the field with a mere 2-of-12 going in from downtown; a 4-of-9 showing from the charity stripe didn't help the Warriors' cause.
In the second half, the Lady Bulldogs extended their lead to as high as 18 in the first five minutes. At the 13-minute mark, SC began their comeback; scoring 11 of 12 points brought the Warriors within nine just a few minute later. Mac quickly responded with a 6-0 run to put them back up by a sizeable margin. Sterling pulled within single figures once more but never was able to overtake the 'Dogs who came out with a 76-63 victory.
McPherson increased their shooting percentage in the second half with 11-of-19 falling; they went 4-of-5 from deep, making four-straight, and cashed in on 13-of-16 from the free throw line. SC also made more in the second with 13-of-31 making their way through the net; they drained 7-of-15 from range and a perfect 6-of-6 from the stripe.
At the end of the game, MC was 25-of-45 from the field, making 55.6%; the squad hit nine three balls and 17-of-23 from the line. Mac hauled in just 29 rebounds with seven offensive boards. They had an equal 17 assists and turnovers and also logged four blocks and 11 steals. 29 of the team's points came from bench players and 38 were scored in the paint.
Chandler Short (Edgewood, Texas) led all McPherson scorers with 16 points, coming on 6-of-10 shooting including three from deep; she also hit one foul shot.
Aubrey Barton (Pratt, Kan.) scored 14 in the game with 4-of-6 field goals going in and 6-of-7 free throws. Leading the way in rebounds was
Bailey Brown (Glen Elder, Kan.) who had six, all defensive; she also scored 11 and had three steals.
Sunny Smart (Coffeeville, Okla.) rounded out the double-digit point-getters with her 10; she made 3-of-6 from the floor and sunk both her attempts from the stripe.
Breahna Gillespie (Little River, Kan.) tied Brown for most rebounds, scored nine points, and had five steals, two assists and a couple blocks for her most complete game of the season.
The Lady Bulldogs now face 8-4 (2-1) Friends University on December 14
th at home for a 5:00 p.m. (CT) contest. The game is McPherson College's Community Appreciation Night where admission is free.
