Baseball Games all go to KWU as ‘Dogs Continue Skid

McPherson, Kan. – A rough set of four games between the Kansas Wesleyan Coyotes and McPherson College all ended with the ‘Yotes on top.  KWU traveled to Mac on March 20th and left victorious 9-3 and 7-3.  MC returned the trip as they went to Salina on Friday but fell 1-0 and 8-3.  The Bulldogs currently sit 4-19 overall and 0-8 in the KCAC.
 
Game 1 – vs. Kansas Wesleyan – L 9-3
 
The first contest of the series started out strong for the ‘Dogs as they came out and scored two runs in the second inning and then put up a third to go ahead 3-2 after three as Kansas Wesleyan scored two in the top of the inning.  Dorian Shelton (Kansas City, Mo.) sent in two with his hit of the ball in the second while Andrew Pina (Wichita, Kan.) brought around the third Mac runner. 
 
Following a scoreless fourth inning, the Coyotes went off, scoring four in the fifth, two in the sixth and one more in the seventh inning to take game one 9-3.
 
Seven hits were logged by MC in their defeat; Pina tallied two as five others totaled one.  Jose Nossa (Valencia, Venezuela) and Brendan Miller (Taber, Alberta, Canada) each made it aboard twice, earning walks at the plate to go along with their hits; Josh Grant (Paris, Texas) got on twice via walks.
 
Nine KWU hits scored the nine Coyote runs.  Kyle Story, Omar Sadaoui and Aaron Heiland each had two while three others put up one.
 
Colter Streck (Woodland Park, Colo.) started at the mound for Mac and went two and two thirds innings, surrendering one earned run and four walks in the 12 batters he faced.  Nolan Huelsmann (Goddard, Kan.) relieved Streck in the third, closed out the inning and then went two more; he allowed five runs, two earned, and six hits.  Tyler Watie (Ulysses, Kan.) came in to the game in the top of the sixth and threw to seven batters, giving up three earned runs in his one and one third innings.  Willie Lopez (Round Rock, Texas) closed out the loss for MC, pitching to the final two batters.
 
 
Game 2 – vs. Kansas Wesleyan – L 7-3
 
In the second game of the day, the Bulldogs got off to a slow start, not scoring until the bottom of the fourth.  Two runs were tallied MC in the inning to tie things up at 2-2, one by Zach Wilson (Miliken, Colo.) as Pina singled up the middle and another by Taylor Werts (Mansfield, Texas) after Nossa hit into a fielder’s choice. 
 
KWU once again got hot in the fifth, scoring four and breaking the game wide open.  Mac’s Keegan Bednasek (Topeka, Kan.) scored on a Miller single in the sixth but game two went 7-3 to the Coyotes.
 
Wilson was one of two McPherson players with two hits and was the lone ‘Dog to have one go for extra bases; Miller was the other Bulldog with two positive knocks of the ball.  Four other athletes totaled one hit.
 
The Coyotes tied MC in hits with eights and had just one player, Story, with two whacks of the ball.
 
Pitcher Jalen Davenport (Miliken, Colo.) got the start for the Bulldogs, going three innings while allowing two earned runs in the 11 batters he faced.  Scott Hughes (Albuquerque, N.M.) came in relief and went two innings, surrendering four runs, two of which were earned.  Lopez threw the sixth inning, walking one and forcing three fly outs.  Werts finished out the game, throwing to three Coyotes.
 
 
Game 3 – at Kansas Wesleyan – L 1-0
 
In the closest of the three games, both teams started sluggish and failed to get runners past home plate.  KWU finally scored in the bottom of the third, bringing in the contest’s lone run.  Mac left one on in both the fifth and sixth innings but couldn’t push the runner in, losing 1-0.
 
Five hits were tallied by the Bulldogs with Wilson leading the squad with two, including a double; Wilson also had the team’s sole stolen base. 
 
Kansas Wesleyan also had five hits; Kyle Lynch was the team’s only multi-hit player.
 
Werts pitched the complete game for Mac, surrendering the one run while striking out two.  He threw to 25 batters while totaling 103 pitches.
 
 
Game 4 – at Kansas Wesleyan – L 8-3
 
There was more scoring on Friday’s second game.  The ‘Yotes started strong, scoring two in the first inning and, following two scoreless innings, put up one more in the bottom of the fourth. 
 
The Bulldogs scored three in the top of the sixth to tie things up at 3-3.  Wilson scored on a muffed throw, Werts was brought home on a Jonny Mills (Dodge City, Kan.) single who then scored himself on a Ty Baker (Peyton, Colo.) double down the right field line. 
 
Kansas Wesleyan took it to the ‘Dogs in the bottom half of the inning, scoring five on five hits to get their lead back heading into the seventh.  MC went one, two, three to end the game on the losing end of the 8-3 score line.
 
Six different Bulldogs earned a hit in game four; Baker’s double was the only multi-base hit. 
 
KWU over doubled MC’s hit total as they logged 13; Chad Zuniga was the team leader with three.  Story recorded a team-high two RBI.
 
Brant Rhoades (Burlington, Colo) got the starting nod from the mound for Mac; he threw for five innings, allowing three earned runs while striking out two of the 24 batters he faced.  Huelsmann entered the game in the sixth and recorded the loss as he gave up the five earned runs. 
 
 
McPherson will be back in action on March 25th as they host the Manhattan Christian Crusaders for a doubleheader at Light Capital Diamonds starting at 1:00 p.m. (CT)
