Shawnee, Okla. – Following the heavy snowfall in Kansas, McPherson, along with seven other teams, ventured south for some impromptu baseball hosted by Saint Gregory’s and Oklahoma Baptist.  After three-straight losses, the Bulldogs got things going in game four, leaving Oklahoma with a 1-3 record.

Game 1 – vs. Midland University – L 5-4

Statistics still to come in.

Game 2 – at Oklahoma Baptist University – L 8-2

The contest began with two and a half scoreless innings before OBU jumped on the board to take the 1-0 lead and tripled their total the following inning.  The Bison then put up four in the bottom of the fifth to go ahead 7-0.  Mac got on to the scoreboard in the sixth on a Josh Grant (Paris, Texas) double that brought in Andrew Pina (Wichita, Kan.); Grant would then cross the plate after advancing to third on an error and home on a Zach Wilson (Miliken, Colo.) single.  The Bulldogs gave up one more run in the bottom half of the inning before failing to score in the seventh, giving the win to Oklahoma Baptist 8-2.

Grant, Wilson and Taylor Werts (Mansfield, Texas) were the lone ‘Dogs to earn a hit in the game; Werts’ was a triple.  Three others made it safely to first by reaching on walks.

13 hits were tabulated by the Bison and they were led by Garrett Roberts, Matt Page and Jeff Johnson who each had two; Page led the squad in RBIs with three, two coming from his two-run homerun.

Nolan Huelsmann (Goddard, Kan.) pitched the first five innings for MC, recording six earned and one unearned runs while striking out three of the 25 batters he took on.  Taylor Werts (Mansfield, Texas) came in relief to start off the sixth inning; he totaled one strikeout and one unearned run from the five Bison he faced.

Game 3 – vs. York College – L 6-2

After four up, three down for McPherson, YC scored two in the bottom of the opening inning to take an early lead.  Neither team had runs on the board in the next two innings despite each squad putting two men on base.  In the third, the ‘Dogs scored Pina on a Ty Baker (Peyton, Colo.) single but then allowed two Cougars to score in the bottom half of the inning putting York up 4-1; YC added two more to their total in the fifth.  Mac scored once more as Lane Barton (Moundridge, Kan.) singled in Wilson in the sixth.  York finished of the Bulldogs in the seventh, putting out the first three up to claim a 6-2 victory.

Six different MC players tallied one hit in Sunday’s first contest; Dorian Shelton (Kansas City, Mo.) made it to first twice as he not only grabbed a hit but earned a walk as the first batter of the competition.

The Cougars totaled six runs on eight hits with Zach Garcia leading the way with his three bats of the ball; five other players had one hit apiece.  Jordan Leis brought in a team-high two runs.

Werts pitched four and a third innings, surrendering all six runs, none of which were earned; he logged five strikeouts and three walks in the loss.  Dominic Cardenas (Henderson, Colo.) finished off the fifth for the Bulldogs before being replaced by Brant Rhoades (Burlington, Colo) in the bottom of the sixth.

Game 4 – at Saint Gregory’s University – W 7-4

The final game of the weekend got off to a slow start as neither team was able to string their hits together in the first four innings.  The Bulldogs changed that with a scoring explosion in the top of the fifth.  On a Brendan Miller (Taber, Alberta, Canada) single, Grant was brought home for the first run of the inning.  After a double by Werts sent Miller to third, Wilson put one in deep left-center to send in both Werts and Miller for a 3-0 advantage.  A pitching changed occurred for SGU and after getting the second out of the inning, Mac posted some more runs.  Victor Betancourt (Margarita Island, Venezuela) singled in Wilson and then after a couple of hits and walks, Shelton scored Baker and pinch runner Josh Locke (Sedwick, Kan.) with a single of his own.  Another switch of pitchers by the Cavilers quickly ended the inning with a groundout; MC was now up 7-0.  In the bottom of the sixth, Saint Gregory’s finally got on the board scoring four runs but fell just short of the ‘Dogs giving McPherson the 7-4 win.

12 total hits were achieved by Mac, three of which came off the bat of Grant.  Werts, Miller and Shelton each had two hits while three others tallied one.  Wilson, Miller and Shelton logged two RBIs apiece while Betancourt scored the seventh team run.

SGU recorded eight hits in their loss; Luke Taylor and Mark Milioto each had two.  Christian Torres and Cody Kollman batted around all four of their team’s runs, each knocking in two on homeruns over the left field fence.

Izak Wherry (Derby, Kan.) got the W for McPherson after pitching the first five and a third innings; he faced 25 batters and struck out four while allowing four runs, one that was earned.  Colter Streck (Woodland Park, Colo.) finished off the sixth inning and Watie closed out the contest with a perfect three up, three down.

The Bulldogs’ next scheduled contest is March 6th when they face the Benedictine Eagles at home.  Start time of the doubleheader is 1:00 p.m. (CT) at Light Capital Diamonds.
