McPherson, Kan. – The Bulldogs played some errorless baseball this weekend and took home three wins because of it.  MC held their own at home on Friday, defeating Bethany College 4-2 and 2-1.  On the road, Mac was defeated 4-3 in game one after the Swedes scored in the bottom of the seventh; game two, the ‘Dogs were the team to score in the seventh, winning 2-0.

Game 1 – vs. Bethany College – W 4-2

After two relatively calm innings of baseball, McPherson stepped up their game in the third, scoring all four of their runs in the bottom half of the inning, taking advantage of a miscue by the Swedes.  The fourth, fifth and sixth innings went by fairly quick, bringing on the game’s final chance for Bethany.

BC got their first and third batters on base and, following a wild throw by Mac, got some runs on the board.  Taylor Werts (Mansfield, Texas) was brought in to close things out and did so after throwing eight pitches, giving the Bulldogs the 4-2 win.

MC only tabbed five hits in their triumph but made each one count.  Werts grabbed two hits himself, scoring one.  Jose Nossa (Valencia, Venezuela)Brendan Miller (Taber, Alberta, Canada) and Keegan Bednasek (Topeka, Kan.) each logged one with Miller leading the team in RBI with two.

The Terrible Swedes outhit McPherson by seven but had the majority of their hits after already getting out twice.  Christian Ornelas was the team leader with his 3-of-4 performance from the plate.

Nolan Huelsmann (Goddard, Kan.) got the win for the Mac pitching staff; he started at the mound and pitched until midway through the seventh inning after getting one out.  Werts moved in from his right field position to finish things and, following a balk that brought in a Swede, took down two of the three batters he faced.

Game 2 – vs. Bethany College – W 2-1

It was a defensive struggle in the second contest of the day with zeros going on the scoreboard for the first three and a half innings and 11 of the game’s 14.  Andrew Pina (Wichita, Kan.) squeezed in Zach Wilson (Miliken, Colo.) in the bottom of the fourth to put Mac ahead 1-0.  That score line stayed until a solo homerun by Bethany’s Aaron Huerta tied things up at 1-1 in the seventh.

The Bulldogs’ had two outs to score one run in the bottom of the inning after leadoff batter Werts was put out.  MC loaded up the bases and, after a fielder’s choice put two outs on the scoreboard saw Dorian Shelton (Kansas City, Mo.) come to the plate.  The outfielder fought from behind the plate and, after a first pitch strike, took four straight balls to walk in the winning run.

The ‘Dogs only had two hits in their victory but drew three walks, being patient from behind the plate.  Wilson and Josh Grant (Paris, Texas) were the two McPherson players to earn a hit.  Pina and Shelton were each credited with a RBI.

BC didn’t do much better hitting the ball as they totaled just five in their loss.  Daniel Hordo grabbed two of the team’s knocks of the ball.

Tyler Watie (Ulysses, Kan.) pitched the first five innings for McPherson, allowing only three hits and zero runs in the 17 batters he faced.  Werts entered the game at the top of the sixth and gave up the team’s lone run while walking another; he picked up the win, his fourth of the year.

Game 3 – at Bethany College – L 4-3

The lone loss for McPherson this week came in the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader with the Swedes.  The ‘Dogs got up early 1-0 but then three-straight runs by BC put the Swedes on top 3-1.  Mac posted two in the fourth to tie things up at 3-3.  Following three total innings of zeros on the board, Bethany got the bases loaded with one out.  On a fielder’s choice, BC brought home the winning run.

MC continued to struggle to put up hits, tabbing just four in the loss; four different ‘Dogs tallied a hit.  Wilson made it aboard twice via walks; three other Mac players also earn a walk.

The Swedes had seven hits with Jose Rodriguez and Daniel Hordo each putting up two.  Huerta had a team-high two RBI.

Scott Hughes (Albuquerque, N.M.) started from the pitching mound and went four and a third innings before he was relieved by Brant Rhoades (Burlington, Colo)  Hughes gave up five hits and three earned runs while striking out three.  Rhoades threw for one and two thirds innings, allowing two hits and a walk before being taken out by Willie Lopez (Round Rock, Texas) who walked three and picked up the loss.

It was another defensive battle between these two squads in the final game of the series.  Only a combined seven hits were tallied in the seven-inning contest and there were nine batters left on base between the two teams with Bethany leading that category with seven.  McPherson was the team that put their hits together and scored two in the top of the seventh inning with a series of singles.  A three up, three down ended the four-game series with Mac taking three following their 2-0 victory.
