Leavenworth, Kan. – Game one of the Saturday doubleheader was as close as they come but the University of Saint Mary took down McPherson 2-1. Game 1 – at University of Saint Mary – L 2-1
The first contest of the doubleheader saw 11 zeros placed on the scoreboard; considering only 13 half-innings were played, this led to a short and low-scoring affair. The Lady Spires scored their two runs in the second inning, taking advantage of a Mac error. McPherson attempted to make a comeback in the seventh starting with an
Ashley Love (Tulsa, Okla.) homerun over the center field fence; two groundouts later, however, the Lady ‘Dogs saw game one go to Saint Mary 2-1.
Ariel McGee (Denver, Colo.) started the game with a hit but was unable to get aboard the rest of the contest;
Whitney Miller (Valley Center, Kan.) and As. Love were the only other MC players to tally a hit in the contest.
Five different Spires totaled a positive knock of the ball in their squad’s victory; Jenna Hansen scored USM’s two runs to lead the team.
Allison Love (Tulsa, Okla.) picked up the loss while pitching all six innings; she surrendered two unearned runs and hit two of the 23 batters she faced.
Game 2 – at University of Saint Mary – L 14-6
Game number two saw plenty more scoring by both teams. The Bulldogs took a 4-1 advantage after their four-run fourth inning. Saint Mary scored one in the fourth then six in the fifth to go up 8-4 but Mac answered with two of their own in the top of the sixth. The Lady Spires exploded for another six in the bottom half of the inning, forcing the run-rule to be put into effect, ending the contest at 14-6.
McPherson put up nine hits in the second competition of the day and was led by
Cassandra Mereno (Wichita, Kan.) who posted two; eight others tabulated one hit apiece.
Simone Donaldson (Halstead, Kan.) and As. Love each saw their hit go over the fence.
USM had a stellar showing from behind the plate as they logged 15 hits. Kim Piatt and Steeli Norton each tabbed three hits to lead the team; three others had two while three more recorded one. Norton also was the team leader in RBI with five.
Al. Love started at the mound again for Mac and pitched part-way through the fifth before she was relieved by
Kaila Atkinson (Magnolia, Texas) Atkinson recorded three total outs before Al. Love came back in to finish out the game.
