Winfield, Kan. – McPherson volleyball and Southwestern College had four close sets on Wednesday with the Lady Moundbuilders winning the first and final two to take a 3-1 victory over Mac. The Bulldogs drop to 9-13 on the year and are now 2-9 in the KCAC.
Southwestern led from the get-go in the opening set as they used some home court advantage; they went on to win 25-17, holding off a late surge by MC. The Bulldogs were the aggressors in the second set, taking a quick lead and never looking back, winning 25-21. The third set went back-and-forth through the first half of the match but then a 5-0 run by SWC gave the Builders a comfortable lead which they rode to a 25-22 triumph. In the final set, Mac was playing catchup after the first few points, never trailing by much but always trailing until the midway point. After sitting tied at 17-17, Southwestern went on a three-point surge that allowed them to keep MC in check; the Moundbuilders won 25-21 to end the match.
McPherson ended the match with a 5% hitting percentage and gave away too many points due to errors; the team logged 35 errors, tying their high of the year. The Bulldogs had three players hit the double-digit mark in kills. The squad was led by Cortlyne Huppe who had 11 on 31 attempts; she also tabbed three total blocks. Taryn Lee and Renee Fredrickson each ended the night with 10 kills. Taylor Johnson led the way in assists with 33. Four MC athletes recorded over 10 digs; Emily Warner topped the team with 24 and was followed by Johnson (16), Lindsay Moss (14), and Maci Grimes (12).
Mac volleyball will kick off the athletic contests for homecoming weekend on Friday the 17th when the host Tabor College; start time is set for 7:00 p.m. (CT) in the Sport Center.
