McPherson, Kan. – It was a tight match between McPherson volleyball and Kansas Wesleyan University on Wednesday. After four close sets, the KCAC-leading Coyotes held off Mac to win 3-1. The Bulldogs move to 9-15 this season and are 2-11 against the conference.
In the opening set, the two teams went back and forth throughout with KWU holding a slim lead the whole way. After a mini-surge, the Lady Coyotes stayed in front just enough to win 25-19.
The second set was a doozy. Kansas Wesleyan used their victory in the opening set to go up big; they led 20-9 and appeared to have the set wrapped up. McPherson had a different plan and went on a 16-3 run to overtake the Coyotes and win the set 25-23, evening up the match at 1-1.
In the third, MC got up quick but a push by Kansas Wesleyan gave them a slight advantage. The Lady Bulldogs stayed right on the heels of KWU but the Coyotes, once again, held off Mac for a 25-20 victory.
The last set of the match was all Kansas Wesleyan. MC seemed gassed as the Coyotes cruised to a 25-13 set and 3-1 match triumph.
Both Taryn Lee and Cortlyne Huppe ended the night with 13 kills; Lee had a team-high 28.6% hitting percentage and also logged five assisted blocks for 15.5 points. Renee Fredrickson was next in kills with eight, she was followed by setter Taylor Johnson who had five kills and a team leading 33 assists. Maci Grimes and Emily Warner totaled a combined 37 digs with Warner making up 21 of them.
It's off to Friends University in Wichita for McPherson's next contest. They face the Lady Falcons on Friday, October 24 at 7:00 p.m. (CT)
