Sterling, Kan. – It was a scoring explosion for McPherson soccer on Saturday as they put six balls past Sterling College's goalie without conceding one themselves. The win moves the Bulldogs to 6-0-1 on the year in the KCAC, keeping them on pace with No. 13 Kansas Wesleyan University for the conference championships.
"Definitely was a nice win for us today," said Coach Quint. "We were clinical in front of goal in the first half but moved the ball better in the second. We got a lot of guys time today which is always nice. Now we have a week to get some guys healthy and prepare for Southwestern."
The scoring started early for Mac as Kevin Ndongo put in an Alex Ronneburg corner less than 10 minutes in. McPherson had to wait nearly 25 minutes before they could celebrate again but did so after a Ronneburg goal. The Bulldogs' next score came less than five minutes later as Kevin Aka scored on Nick Torres' second assist of the day. Tito Ruiz blasted in a penalty kick a short while later to push the score to 4-0. As halftime came closer, MC was able to get another one in, this time it was Jose Angulo slotting in an Oscar Cortez ball. The 'Dogs led 5-0 at the break.
In the second period, the shooting slowed down a bit for Mac as some of the reserves got some playing time and they worked on keeping possession. After having three shots rejected earlier in the half, Trent Keller finally was able to score with 10 minutes remaining, giving the Bulldogs the 6-0 victory.
MC shot the ball 15 times in the 90-minute match and was able to put 10 on frame. Keller led the group with his four tries and was followed by Aka and Ronneburg who each took three. Four different players had two shots on target.
The Bulldog defense held Sterling to just six total shots with one going on target. Tanner Horton started the game in goal for McPherson; the freshman played the first half and recorded the win. In the second the Jamaican, Andre White, came in relief and preserved the shutout for MC, saving the one shot the Warriors put on goal.
McPherson gets a week of rest before their next contest as they host Southwestern College on November 1st at 3:00 p.m. (CT)
