McPherson, Kan. – McPherson College volleyball may have lost 3-0 to the University of Saint Mary but they were close sets as the lost by just 11 total points. The Lady 'Dogs drop down to 9-11 overall and are 2-7 in their first go-around of the KCAC.
The Bulldogs led throughout the opening set, going ahead by as many as five but a late surge by USM pushed the Lady Spires past Mac and gave them the opening set 25-22. Saint Mary took the reins in the second set as they exploded out quick; McPherson played catchup the rest of the way but never got closer than three, losing 25-19. In the third set, USM again got out fast but the Bulldogs took the lead at 18-17; from there the two went back and forth with MC having two chances to end the match but the home team Spires pushed through and won 26-24.
The two middles for McPherson had good nights statistically as they combined for 30 of the team's 43 kills. Cortlyne Huppe led the way with 17 kills on a team-high 35 swings; she also had four solo blocks for 21 total points. Taryn Lee recorded 13 kills and had two blocks herself. Taylor Johnson logged 33 assists while libero Emily Warner led the team in digs with 19.
McPherson has two more away matches before they can play in front of their own crowd. The 'Dogs travel to Sterling, Kansas to play the Sterling College Warriors on the 10th of October with the match starting at 7:00 p.m. (CT)
