McPherson, Kan. – There is now just one game in between McPherson men's soccer and a regular season championship after they defeated the Southwestern College Moundbuilders 3-0 on Saturday. The 'Dogs are currently 11-3-2 overall and hold a 7-0-1 record in the KCAC and are tied with Kansas Wesleyan at the top of the conference.
"Today was an enjoyable day," said Coach Quint. "We honored a great group of guys in our seniors. We played well for 90 minutes but just couldn't break them down in the first half. In the second half, our guys focused on what we talked about and it paid off. We finished some nice goals and created a lot today."
McPherson went into the locker room deadlocked with the Moundbuilders despite outshooting SWC 11-2. The second half was much different as Mac came out aggressive and scored less than five minutes into the period as Octavio Villa nocked in a Kevin Aka pass. The 'Dogs weren't done yet as Alex Ronneburg scored a pair of goals in a matter of two minutes around the 60th; the first went in off a Jose Angulo ball and the second was assisted by Oscar Cortez. MC held off the Builders the rest of the way for their seventh KCAC win of the year.
The Bulldogs took 22 shots and placed nine on frame. Ronneburg took a team-high seven shots, putting three on target. Nick Torres, Aka, and Villa each recorded three shots; all of Aka's were on frame.
Freshman goalie Tanner Horton had a pretty lax day as he recorded one lone save in the 90-minute contest; he now has six wins on the season.
On Tuesday the 4th, MC faces a Bethany squad that is right on the heels of the Bulldogs and KWU for the conference title; kickoff is slated for 3:00 p.m. (CT) in McPherson.
