McPherson, Kan. – After multiple rescheduling and canceling, McPherson baseball was finally able to have their Bulldog Classic over the past two days; it wasn't exactly how things were scheduled but they were able to get games played in-between winter storms.
On Wednesday, a pair of games was played between Dickinson State University and Central Christian College that went the way of CCC as the Tigers won 8-7 and 5-4. On Thursday, Mac played the Trojans in the AM, losing 8-7, then Central Christian took down DSU one more time 5-4, and the day was capped off with an inter-city battle between MC and CCC that the Bulldogs took 4-3.
Game 1 –vs. Dickinson State Univ. – L 8-7
McPherson's first contest of the classic started out about as bad as it could. The 'Dogs gave up numerous walks and trailed 3-0 after the first half-inning. Mac put up one in the bottom of the opening inning but two more in the third and three in the fourth by DSU seemed to put things to bed. The Bulldogs didn't go down without a fight and scored five runs in the fifth and one in the sixth to pull within one heading into the final inning. After holding the Trojans scoreless, MC got the bases loaded with two outs but was unable to bring one around, losing 8-7.
The 'Dogs tallied eight hits in their defeat with Zach Wilson (Miliken, Colo.) and Jose Nossa (Valencia, Venezuela) leading the way with their two knocks of the ball; Nossa scored twice while Wilson tabulated a team-high two RBIs. Josh Grant (Paris, Texas) got safely aboard twice with a hit and a walk; he also recorded one of the team's seven runs.
Tyler Lambert (Vinita, Okla.) started the game on the mound but had a rough outing; he threw to four batters and logged three walks surrendered and one hit. Brant Rhoades (Burlington, Colo) was brought in to finish the first inning and went three before being relieved himself; in his time pitching, he gave up seven hits, four earned runs and a walk. Keegan Hays (Salina, Kan.) finished up the fourth for Mac, allowing two hits and one earned run to the five batters faced. Grant pitched for the rest of the contest, tallying just two hits to the 11 DSU players he came up against.
Game 2 – vs. Central Christian College – W 4-3
Mac's second game started much better with a 1-0 lead after the first inning. Central would score two in the third but the 'Dogs answered with a pair of their own in the bottom half of the inning to go back in front 3-2. MC put their final run on the board in the fifth and held the Tigers to just one run in the seventh, preserving their 4-3 victory.
Again, McPherson logged eight hits; three Bulldogs accounted for six as Austin Russell (Victoria, British Columbia, Canada), Nossa, and Wilson each had two. Seth Davenport (McPherson, Kan.) and Jordan Slaton (Dodge City, Kan.) accounted for the other hits. Wilson was responsible for two of MC's four-run total.
Taylor Werts (Mansfield, Texas) went six and two-thirds, picking up the W; he threw to 29 different Tiger players and allowed seven hits, three earned runs, and three walks. Grant came in during the final inning to close out the game, earning the save.
Currently McPherson is slated to play AIB College of Business on Monday, March 3 but with the impending weather, things could be changing. Continue to check www.macbulldogs.com for any schedule information.
