Second Half Push not Enough for Lady ‘Dogs

McPherson, Kan. – The first half hole was too deep for Lady Bulldog basketball on Saturday as they fell just short of Tabor College 67-54.  Mac moves to 8-18 for the season and 4-10 against their conference opponents.

MC and Tabor stayed neck-and-neck for the first several minutes with the two squads trading baskets tit-for-tat with four ties and three lead changes coming prior to the midway point; after the last tie, the Lady 'Jays went on a 10-0 run, increasing their advantage into double-digits for the first time in the game.  Mac pushed back but went into the locker room trailing 39-26.

The Bulldogs drained 10-of-27 in the opening period with 2-of-12 dropping from distance; they made all four of their first half free throws.  TC put 14-of-30 through the hoop including 6-of-14 three balls; they converted on 5-of-8 from the charity stripe.  McPherson led bench scoring 10-0 after the first 20 minutes of play as four different players who entered the game from the bench scored.

In the second, MC stayed down 10+ for the first half of the period with their largest deficit being 16 with 9:00 showing on the clock; the 'Dogs then put together 10-straight points to pull within six less than five minutes later.  Tabor responded with an 11-0 run of their own to put the game to bed; the Blue Jays walked out of the Sport Center with a 67-54 victory.

Mac knocked down 11-of-25 in the final period, watching 3-of-11 go in from downtown; they only hit 3-of-6 from the foul line.  Tabor counted 10 of their 23 field goals but missed all six from the arc; they went 8-of-11 from the stripe.

Lady Bulldog basketball scored on 21-of-52 for the contest, bucketing 5-of-23 from beyond the three-point line; only 10 free throws were attempted, they made seven.  32 rebounds were tabbed by MC, two more than their opponent.  14 assists, 13 turnovers, five steals and five blocks were logged by the 'Dogs.  37 of McPherson's points came in the paint while the bench ended the night scoring 19.

Aubrey Barton (Pratt, Kan.) dropped in 15 points, connecting on 6-of-10 from the floor and 2-of-4 from the foul stripe; she also netted seven rebounds, two assists and a career-high four blocks.  Contributing to the bench points, freshman Callie Atkins (Stillwater, Okla.) scored 11 on 4-of-10 shooting with 2-of-8 dropping from deep and 1-of-2 from the free throw line.  The Beloit High duo of Cami Engelbert (Beloit, Kan.) and Bailey Brown (Glen Elder, Kan.) each tabulated eight points; Engelbert scored all of hers in the first half while Brown had  an even split between the two periods.

McPherson will travel to Salina, Kansas for their next battle as they face the 12-13, 7-7 Kansas Wesleyan Lady Coyotes; tipoff is set for February 13th at 6:00 p.m. (CT)
