Box Score McPherson, Kan. – Bulldog baseball bested Benedictine College on Tuesday to move to 11-19 on the season; the game took 10 innings, but Mac was able to win 5-4.
Mac scored first putting up two runs in the opening inning on just one hit; Benedictine managed to get a run back in the top of the second after an error kept them alive. The 'Dogs added to their lead in the fifth getting one but BC was able to tie the game over the next two innings, scoring a run in each inning; in both innings, Mac avoided more damage by stalling a pair of Ravens. MC would score again to put them up 4-3 after seven. Benedictine answered in the eighth after a leadoff walk, but could only tie the game at 4-4. With the bases loaded in the bottom of the tenth and one out, Jordan Slaton (Dodge City, Kan.) grounded into what could have been a potential inning ending double-play, however, both runners were able to beat the throws allowing the runner to score and give McPherson a 5-4 triumph.
Hits were scarce for the 'Dogs as they only gathered five all game; they did make it on seven times via walks. Seth Davenport (McPherson, Kan.) led the way with two of the five hits and also was hit by a pitch to make it safely on a team-high three times. Austin Russell (Victoria, British Columbia, Canada) made it aboard twice, once on a hit and the other on a walk. Taylor Werts (Mansfield, Texas) drove in two of Mac's runs.
Keegan Hays (Salina, Kan.) started the game on the mound and gave up three runs, two earned, on six hits with a walk in six and a third innings. Brant Rhoades (Burlington, Colo) came in relief, pitching just two-thirds of an inning, giving up just one hit. Seth Sterling (McPherson, Kan.) entered for Rhoades and threw for one inning; he allowed a single earned run on one hit and a walk. Werts pitched the final two innings, surrendering no runs on one hit, earning himself the victory.
Bulldog baseball will be at home for their next outing as they host the Bethany College Terrible Swedes on Friday, April 4; the doubleheader is set to begin at 5:00 p.m. (CT)
