Box Score 4 McPherson, Kan. – McPherson baseball went 0-4 this weekend against No. 25 Sterling College. The Bulldogs lost the first two in Sterling 3-2, and 7-3 and dropped both at home 18-17 and 15-2 on Saturday, moving to 16-28 overall and 10-14 in conference. MC currently holds a one-game lead on Kansas Wesleyan and Saint Mary for the fifth place seed in the upcoming KCAC tournament with four games to play.
Game 1 – at Sterling College – L 3-2
The game started off with Mac and Sterling knotted at zero after four innings and then in the top of the fifth the 'Dogs put up the first run on a sacrifice fly. Another sac fly in the sixth gave McPherson a 2-0 lead, but Sterling was able to even the score with a two-run shot in the bottom half of the sixth. SC went on to win3-2 with a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh.
Six different Bulldogs managed to get a hit in the game, led by Taylor Werts (Mansfield, Texas) who also added a RBI to his hit; Jordan Slaton (Dodge City, Kan.) had the other RBI for Mac.
Werts pitched the entire game fanning six batters; he allowed three earned runs on nine hits with one walk.
Game 2 – at Sterling College – L 7-3
Slaton got the Bulldog offense on the board with a solo homerun in the top half of the second of the second outing of the day. Sterling answered right back with a run in the bottom of the second and three more in the third to take a 4-1 lead. Mac cut the deficit in half scoring another run in the fifth, but the Warriors again put three runs on the board to extend their lead. The 'Dogs would add another run in the seventh, but it would be a moot point as they fell short, losing game two 7-3.
Zach Wilson (Miliken, Colo.) and Jose Nossa (Valencia, Venezuela) got two hits to top the Bulldog offense. Austin Russell (Victoria, British Columbia, Canada) and Tom Potter (Dayton, Minn.) each drove in a run for Mac in the loss.
Scott Hughes (Albuquerque, N.M.) started for Mac, surrendering seven earned runs in four and a third innings with five walks and eight hits en route to the loss. Brant Rhoades (Burlington, Colo) finished out the game with a scoreless inning and two thirds of hitless pitching.
Game 3 – vs. Sterling College – L 18-17
Sterling things going in the first game Saturday scoring four runs in the first; the offense for both teams was just getting started. Mac scored one in the first and Sterling answered back with a run in the second. The ' Dogs would score two more in the second to cut the Warrior lead to two, but Sterling would again score one in the top half of the third to take a 6-3 lead. McPherson would open the floodgates in the third scoring 10 runs; the team sent 16 total batters to the plate in the inning. Sterling put up another four runs over the next two innings to get the score back within four. MC distanced themselves a little more with three in the fifth but Sterling would take the lead back with an eight run sixth inning. The Bulldogs weren't done though scoring one run in the seventh but left the bases loaded to end the game in defeat, 18-17.
Wilson reached on a hit four times and drove in three runs in the game. Slaton led the team in runs batted in going 3-of-5 with four RBI in the game.
Nolan Huelsmann (Goddard, Kan.) started for Mac going four and two third innings surrendering 10 earned runs on 15 hits with no walks. Rhoades was the first Bulldog pitcher out of the pen going a complete inning with three earned runs four hits and no walks. Colter Streck (Woodland Park, Colo.) allowed five earned runs on five hits and no walks and earned the loss without recording an out. Keegan Hays (Salina, Kan.) finished out the game for Mac going an inning and a third, giving up no runs on two hits and a walk.
Game 4 – vs. Sterling College – L 16-2
Sterling continued their offensive output in game two scoring one in the first and eight in the second, essentially putting the game to rest early. Mac got a single run in the bottom of the first and then their other in the fifth. Sterling continued to pour it on, scoring four runs in the third and three more before the game was over to make the final score 16-2.
Nossa and Werts were the only Mac players with two hits in game two; Slaton had the lone RBI for the 'Dogs.
Josh Grant (Paris, Texas) started for Mac, pitching an inning and two thirds; he allowed seven earned runs on six hits with two walks to earn the loss. Loren Farley (Wellington, Kan.) pitched, but was unable to record an out so was replaced by Tyler Lambert (Vinita, Okla.) who got out of the second for the Bulldogs. Rhoades pitched two thirds of an inning giving four unearned runs and four hits. Corey Taylor (Iola, Kan.) threw the longest for McPherson as he went three and a third innings; he surrendered two earned runs, four hits and three walks. Shon Pinard (Sedan, Kan.) finished out the game giving up one run on one hit in the final inning.
Next for McPherson is Senior Day as NAIA No. 14 and KCAC No. 1 Tabor College comes to town for a doubleheader on April 25th; the DH is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m. (CT) at Light Capital Diamonds.
