McPherson, Kan. – Game two of the conference season is set for Saturday, November 21 and the Bulldogs of McPherson College will be traveling to North Newton, Kansas for a matchup with the Bethel College Threshers. The JV is set to start at 1:00 p.m. (CT) with varsity at 5:00.
Scouting McPherson
After starting the season with a four-game losing streak, the Lady 'Dogs are finding their stride as they've gone 2-1 in their last three outings. Most recently the team took down Southwestern College for the first time since 2007, breaking a 19-game losing streak.
Last Time Out – Against the Builders, the two teams never let each other out of their sights as they game had 15 ties and eight lead changes; the largest lead for either team was six points. Despite shooting 44.4% in the opening half, Mac went into the locker room down 45-44; the team struggled from the stripe, giving up six opportunities. In the second half the pace of play slowed a bit which led to fewer points being scored by both teams. The game came down to the wire and a last second bucket by Ashton Bruner gave the game to McPherson, 59-58. MC ended the night hitting 21-of-54 from the floor and 6-of-19 from deep; they converted on just 11-of-20 free throws. The Bulldogs recorded 18 turnovers, 12 steals, and nine assists.
Freshman Amanda Allen was big for McPherson on Thursday night as she scored a team-high 14 points on 5-of-10 shooting with 2-of-6 threes falling; the forward made both of her free throws and also pulled in six rebounds to lead the Bulldogs. Georgia Smart was next on the scoring list with her 13, coming on 5-of-14 with 3-of-4 foul shots; the senior also grabbed five total rebounds. Bailey Brown was the final double-digit scorer for Mac with her 10-point total; she hit 3-of-8 field goals with two threes while making 2-of-4 from the stripe.
Year at a Glance – McPherson is scoring 67.7 points per game while allowing right under 70 for a -1.6 scoring margin. The 'Dogs have hit 40.3% from the floor with 29.8% going in from range; they are connecting on just over 70% from the charity stripe. On average, MC is bringing down 39.7 rebounds a game and have a positive rebounding margin of 2.6. They tally 19.7 turnovers, 13.9 assists, and 9.3 steals; their assist and steals numbers are second best in the KCAC
Brown is the lone 'Dog to average double-digit points with her 14.1 ppg; she is shooting in nearly 50% from the field and has dropped 10-of-21 three balls. The senior has gone 33-of-40 from the foul line and also grabs 4.7 boards a night. Newcomer Ashton Bruner sits at 9.5 points a contest and leads the way in rebounds with her 53 total; she also tops the team in blocked shots with nine. Smart has identical numbers to Bruner in terms of scoring; both have hit 22 field goals and 13 free throws for 57 total points. Allen averages 8.1 point per game and has also blocked away eight shots on the year.
The Bulldogs will host Ottawa University for their first home KCAC game of the year on November 24th starting at 6:00 p.m.
Scouting Bethel
The Lady Threshers have played six games this season but only three have counted. BC sits at 0-3 on the year with losses to York College, Mid-America Christian University, and most recently their first KCAC game of the year to No. 13 Oklahoma Wesleyan University.
Last Time Out – A poor shooting performance by Bethel in the opening half put the Threshers behind the eight-ball against nationally ranked OKWU. BC shot in 36.4% for the first 20 minutes with just 1-of-8 threes falling. In the second half, Bethel played much better and even out-shot the Eagles; the Threshers made 20-of-36 field goals with 4-of-11 from deep but it wasn't enough as they fell 97-83. Bethel closed out the game shooting 46.4%, 32-of-69, with 5-of-19 three balls dropping through. They pulled in 36 total rebounds with 15 offensive boards. The team had 16 turnovers, eight steals, seven assists, and four blocks.
As she has done for most of her four-year career, Lauren Ulrich led the way in scoring for BC with 28 points; the senior scored on 10-of-17 field goals with 4-of-8 threes and 4-of-7 free throws making their way through. Jamie Tschetter and Kylee Schunn both netted nine points; Tschetter led the Threshers in rebounds with eight. Also pulling in eight boards was Kendra Scott; the forward had seven on the offensive end of the floor and scored six points as well.
Year at a Glance – This season, Bethel is scoring 71.3 points a night while allowing over 85 to their opponents. The team makes 40.7 percent of their field goals which is second best in the KCAC; they are only shooting 26.5 percent from deep, making a conference eighth best 4.3 a game. The Threshers haul in 40 rebounds a night but have a negative rebounding margin of 5.3. Through their three countable games, BC averages 18.3 turnovers, 12.0 assists, and a KCAC third best 9.0 steals per contest.
Ulrich nets 19.3 points a night while shooting in 53.7 percent from the floor; she has hit 8-of-18 threes (44.4%) and 6-of-9 foul shots (66.7%). Schunn is next on the list with her 10.0 ppg average; she has made 11 field goals with two coming from range in her three starts. Elise Gerlach is close to a double-digit average, sitting at 9.0 points a night. Tschetter totals 8.3 points each time out and leads BC in rebounding average at 7.7.
Bethel is set to travel to Sterling College on November 24th for their next contest.
