McPherson set to Host Braves

– The first home conference game of the season for McPherson women's basketball is set for Tuesday the 24th against the Ottawa University Braves at 6:00 p.m. (CT) in the Sport Center. 

Scouting McPherson

The Lady Bulldogs are 3-5 this season and a perfect 2-0 in the KCAC.  The team started the conference season with a nail-biter win at Southwestern, 59-58, and then a 10-point slugfest victory at Bethel College on Saturday, 68-58.

Last Time Out – Against the Threshers, after a slow start, MC started to pull away from Bethel and following back-to-back 16-point quarter headed into the locker room in total control of the game, 32-23.  BC stormed out of the locker room and ended the third quarter on a run that brought the score to 47-43 with 10 minutes to play.  The Bulldogs hit their free throws in the final quarter to give them the 68-58 win; Mac scored their final 12 points from the stripe.  McPherson ended the game hitting just 30.3 percent from the field with just 4-of-17 threes falling; they did make 32-of-46 free throws.  The team had an impressive 52 rebounds with 15 coming on the offensive glass; they also had 19 turnovers, 15 steals, and seven assists.

Bailey Brown only made 3-of-11 field goals but went 16-of-18 from the foul line for a game-high 22 points; she also led the team in rebounds with eight.  Bruner was the only other player to hit double-digits in scoring with her 10 points in just 23 minutes of playing time; the McPherson native went 3-of-5 from the floor and a perfect 4-of-4 from the stripe.  Sunny Smart made 3-of-6 threes for her nine points.  Reagan McClellan only scored seven points but dished out five assists from her point guard position.  Tabbing eight boards and eight points was Amanda Allen; she had three offensive rebounds in the game.

Year at a Glance – This year Mac is scoring 67.8 points a game while allowing 0.1 points more to their opponents; they are making 39.2% from the floor with just 29.1% coming from behind the arc.  The Bulldogs net 70.5 percent of their free throws.  On the year, MC pulls down 41.3 rebounds a game and has a positive rebounding margin of 4.3.  They are third in the KCAC in assists and steals with 13.0 and 11.0, respectively; the team also turns the ball over 16.6 times a game and record a KCAC second best 2.14 blocks.

Brown tops the 'Dogs in scoring thus far with a 15.1 average; she has made a team-high 31 field goals and is shooting 84.5% from the foul stripe, 49-of-58.  The guard is second on the team in rebounds with 41 through the team's eight games.  Ashton Bruner is McPherson's leading rebounder, averaging 8.4 a night; she is scoring 9.6 points each time out and leads the team in blocked shots with nine.  Sunny Smart and Amanda Allen both are averaging 8.1 points per contest; Smart has made a team-high 14 three-point buckets while Allen is getting the majority of her total in the paint.

MC will have a bit of time off before their next contest which is set for December 3rd at Kansas Wesleyan University in Salina, Kansas.

 

 

Scouting Ottawa

The Braves have had a rough year.  The team sits at 1-6 overall and is 0-2 against the conference; they've played two of the top-3 KCAC teams so far.  OU lost a rough 52-37 contest to Tabor to start the KCAC season where they shot the ball just 37 times while turning it over 24 times.  In their first home conference game of the year, Ottawa dropped a 76-61 contest to Oklahoma Wesleyan.

Last Time Out – Ottawa had the daunting task of facing a red-hot OKWU squad on Saturday.  The Braves stuck with Oklahoma Wesleyan through the first half, trailing 36-35 but OU could not keep the pace in the second, falling 76-61.  Ottawa shot 30.8% for the game, making 20-of-65 from the field with 8-of-30 from range; they did a nice job at the line, making 13-of-14.

OU was led by Hannah Thomas who scored 16 points on 3-of-7 three balls and 1-of-4 two-point buckets along with 5-of-6 free throws.  Kaylee Williams entered from the bench and went 3-of-5 from the floor with a pair of threes and also made both of her free throws for 10 points.  Madi Stewart pulled in a team-high 10 rebounds with two off the offensive glass; the junior scored on just 3-of-13 field goals in her team's loss. 

On the year, the Braves are at the bottom of the KCAC in points scored a game at 55.0; they rank 9th in scoring margin at -10.7.  The team makes 35.2 percent from the floor with just 28 percent of their threes finding the bottom of the net; they do lead the KCAC in free throw percentage at 77.8%.  Ottawa is last in the league in total rebounding with an average of 31.6 per contest; their rebounding margin is -6.4.  The team nets 16.6 turnovers, 10.0 assists, 6.1 steals, and 2.1 blocks each time out.

Stewart is the leading scorer for Ottawa this season, averaging 11.3 points; she has made a team-high 28 field goals including eight from deep.  The guard also brings down 5.6 rebounds a night, second highest on the team.  Thomas is close to averaging double-digits with her 9.7 points per game.  Ashley Romig leads the way in rebounding, pulling in 6.4 a contest; she also scores 9.4 points and has made a team-high 30-of-33 free throws.

The next game for the Braves is Haskell Indian Nations University which they play on November 30th.
